Is it possible to use a cell phone purchased in, say NZ, and use it in Korea? If not, is there anything that can be done to modify it so that it works in Korea?

Is it a GSM phone? I have been told that you can purchase SIM cards at the airports and some phone shops.. though I don't know it personally.
Korea uses the CDMA system primarily and you need a phone for that. |

Yes, it's a GSM phone. Does Korea have different GSM parameters or is it that you can't use GSM phone at all? Thanks for your help.
I'm completely clueless when it comes to phones. |

You can bring it.
You MAY be able to use it as a global roaming phone but you will pay for it.
The sim phones and sim chips provided at the airport are to allow Koreans to use global roaming when they travel, not foreigners to use foreign phones here. This is still a closed system (technology notwithstanding).
I have phones from Canada and the Philippines that I can use here on a global roaming basis but I cannot get a Korean number for them.
You can buy a Korean phone here (with English menus) for as little as 30k won and use a pay-as-you-go / prepaid service. Quick and easy with no hassle. All you need is your passport.
