I'm just wondering how many people here have gotten their own housing seperate from their employer. I don't mean that your employer paid the key money and you pay rent. I mean it is 100% yours - that could be you paid deposit, live in a hasuk or whatever.

I lived in provided housing for only my first year and then moved on because I don't like feeling endentured to my employer. Emancipate yourself and get your own house.

First contract I understand, but the ability to save means that most people who decide to stay should be able to afford at least 5mil deposit on thier own place.

I have my own place. I moved out of the university's dorm a most a year ago. Granted it is a one room, but I don't need much space for I am not there much, only for sleeping and some TV. The pure hypocrisy of living in the dorm compared to how 95% of the Korean population lives drove me out. I agree with you 100%, company housing make you beholden onto your employer, but not live we aren't already, but only more so.

I've had my own place for the last 6 years, moving every two years to progressively nicer place. This week we are moving to our nicest apartment so far. It's 33 pyung, 3 bedrooms, two bathrooms, underground parking lot and only 3 years old. I can't wait!

They give us an apartment and we dont have to pay rent?! Those sly devils, those Koreans!

Anyway, it's never been an issue for me in any way. I've been able to rely on having an apartment more than I've been able to rely on getting my salary on time and in full.
