When I got here two years ago, Korean students were still talking about how Korea was robbed of a gold medal in short track skating. Damn that Apolo Ohno 'n' all. Roll forward 2 years later. A Korean not only wins gold, but the silver, and the hated Ohno fell on his ass. You'd think students would be dancing in their desks.
Oh no.
"Did you see who won a gold in short track?"
Blank stares.
"Korea won a gold in short track."
Blank stares.
"In the Olympics."
Blank stares.
"Against Apolo Ohno, even."
Blank stares.
Speculation: If Koreans are perceived to be "robbed" of even the most minor glory by an American, they pay attention. Send their customary death threats and crash Internet servers. If they're winning gold in an obscure Olympic sports, in an obscure Italian city, in a lesser Olympics, they just don't care.
Any of your kids manage to notice the gold medal win? |

One of my kids knew about it. But, he is a speed skater so that's why. I never mentioned to the rest of my kids and it wasn't mentioned to me. |

No. I don't think. It's about how our students think. That I'm using a current event doesn't mean it necessarily belongs in the current events forum. |
