I've got health problems that are forcing me to return to my home country sooner than planned, after over three years at the same hagwon.

Now the director has asked me to help them find the next foreign teacher to take my place when I go.

But I wanna go soon! (I don't feel well at all. No details here.)

So should I put out the effort to help them? They have been very nice and good to me, and I've enjoyed my time here, but I really don't feel like it. Yet I was going to leave at the end of April and now am likely to go much sooner than that, so I feel some obligation. Arggghh. What's the least that I can do?

I could use advice from those who have been in a similar situation, expected to help find another foreign teacher. Did you? What did you do? Were they upset if you didn't? etc

Nope..

Did you give them 1 month notice?

If yes then they are on their own unfortunatley.

Tell them you have no friends.

I was thinking of doing it today or by Monday. I would even like to return home sooner, as I'm sicker than a dog (but, of course, Korean employers don't mind sick workers, one is expected to still work).

What CAN I do to help them, but exert the minimum of effort/energy?

Place a free ad (renew it twice daily to make sure it stays near the top) on www.worknplay.co.kr , and they can interview the applicants (if you must return home immediately). And have them pay to place an ad here. They don't have the luxury of being cheap about it, given the short time span.

Van's been advertising his job since he's been posting here. I'm sure he'll get a few PMs after people read this thread.

Sounds like a good gig. Might be difficult for a newbie to follow in his footsteps, however.

I've enjoyed my time at the hagwon, with my apartment, with the town, with the island, with the locals. And I've worked hard to be the best teacher I can be, though far from perfect. And the situation isn't perfect for everyone, since the island ain't in Seoul Wink

I want to end my time here on an equally good note. But I feel awful physically and am not up to doing much more.

Crying or Very sad I just gave my one-month's notice.

I've been at this job since late 2002. It's hard to leave.

If you are really sick - go home NOW. You don't want to be caught in a situation where you are really sick and in a foreign country. If you have taught at that school for that I'm sure they will understand this. Sounds like you've done a really good job staying for so long. Good luck

I did it. Twice. One time worked out very well and I found a good teacher. But, they kept changing their tune on contract details, so it ended up looking like I was lying in the ad. The teacher would contact me and I'd have to tell them the change or we'd be at the interview and they'd suddenly spring the change on us at the same time.

The 2nd time was not good. I gave them 2 months notice. They weren't sure if they needed my help to find a new teacher or if they had a friend who was going to help them. I kept telling them that I need to know because finding a teacher may not be as easy as it was the first time. They waited until a couple of weeks before I was leaving. I tried for a week which really wasn't enough time. Then they found someone at the eleventh hour through a recruiter.

If you're going to do it, make sure you know EXACTLY who they want and EXACTLY what the contract details are. And, get on it now. Good luck.

You could always post a thinly disguised "great job available" thread on Dave's Wink

Thank you.

Nice to see at least one relevant post. I'll take your advice.
