Ok, here's a serious question. Why, oh Why, is there a universe? I'm not asking "How?", so please don't bore me with the Big Bang theory. The question is "Why?": Why was there a Big Bang, what if anything came before it or exists outside it, why is there even anything at all?
For those with religion, the answer is not "God made it." My question for you is "Why?": Why was/is there a God/Vishnu/Chaos, what if anything came before him/her/them/it or exists outside the same, why is there even anything at all? |

The question makes no sense to me.
Why do you ask?
What sort of answer are you looking for?
What difference does it make? |

An ex-con loser of a fundi christian who, while trying to convice me that the earth was only 7000 yrs old, told me that the reason the universe was there, the entire sha-bang, every star, planet and piece of space dust, was there so we could set our clocks correctly. So we could order time or some such nonsense. God did it, he said, so time would work. Everything orbits around everything and that gives us our sense of time.
Did I mention the ex-con loser fundi christian part? I feel that's very important when the subject of his credibility is mentioned.
As for my own personal belief, I think it just is what it is. Why all the hair on your head. Why not just one strand. Why is water wet, why not dry. Or, as the men said "Particle Man. When he's underwater does he get wet or does the water get him instead." It's so completely unknowable, the Universe, that it's absurd to look for an answer. Not that I don't think it's a fun question, just a bit of a silly one. Unless you're FiveEagles, then it's just "Beacuse God said so."

Here is how you will find the answer.
1. Go to Mexico.
2. Rent a hotel room for a few days.
3. Find an animal medicine supply store.
4. Purchase large quantities of ketamine.
5. Bake it. Cut it. Bump it.
6. Wait.
Please report back with your findings. |

JD,
I don't know if 'why is there a universe' is a reasonable question. I mean that with all respect. There are only two possible answers, or types of answers. 1)God made it for his ultimate creation; us. And 2) It just is, and is independent or outside of why. In my opinion, and in all likelihood, there is no why.
Perhaps a better questions would be 'what is the nature of the universe'.? |

I would say it exists to illustrate the glory of God, to show his greatness.
If you don't believe in god, then you don't need to know "why"- there is no why. It just happened randomly and spontaneously and has no purpose.
In which case you would be brought back to "How'. How did those first elements and gasses in the primordial soup come into being? How can atoms spontaneously arise from absolutely nothing? |

Same way "god" arose from nothing. |

Yeah yeah but if God made it, who made God?
I post this question because it bugs the hell out of me. I can't figure out any good reason why the universe should be here. |
