Hit the ball with your head !

Run around for an hour and a half and be happy with a 0-0 final.

Why not?

Laughing

No worries there Swiss James, won't be any FA-cup style replays. This is the final penalty kick shoot-out.

Stop the hateful bickering. There's been enough blood shed around here. Let's do away with this protracted trench warfare and decide once and for all, most swiftly, decisively and conclusively: Are we, as a Dave's micro-community, pro or anti football (aka soccer) ???

Look at it as a democratic referendum or a final duel. Either way, the results will be non-negotiable.

You decide!!!

Not much drama in the outcome given that the total number of humans possibly into soccer vs. "football" is something along the lines of 6.5 billio to 300 million.

Not on my part anyway.

I'm pretty confident that the world appeal of Football (soccer) and the sheer number of football fans means it's the number one sport in the world.

The thing is, I don't take personal pride in that. I didn't invent football. I don't even play it anymore. It's not something I feel I can boast about. And anyway, I don't need to prove anything. The amazing interest in football around the world speaks for itself. Nothing to prove here.

The insecurity seems to come from the followers of other large sports. Hockey and American football fans love to dismiss football as a wussy sport. Not tough enough. As if that has anything to do with sport.

Football-lovers enjoy the skill of the game, the excitement of important matches, the rivalry between certain clubs and countries, and the culture which has grown up around football. How tough you have to be to play football is not really on our minds.

This soccer fan has nothing to say about the other sports. I have but a passing interest in them. I don't think anything less or more of the people who play those sports or follow those sports.

When I was 4 years old my family moved to Rome, Italy and we did not return to the States for 8 years. Since I was student at Italian schools, all my friends played soccer, as did I
Well, I became a fan of Lazio and have been following the team ever since.
Soccer is truly ' The Beautiful Sport.'

I like soccer, I play soccer and all-around, it is a great sport. My only problem with soccer has to do with exactly how tough the players are.

My problem isn't that the sport isn't tough enough, it is that the players aren't. I can't stand it when two guys are running for the ball, one guy accidentally breathes on the other player, and then this player than proceeds to act like he was hit with a shot-gun and then rolls around on the ground for a while, then realizes nobody is looking at him , whines about getting no whistle, and gets up and is completely fine, and realizes his ACT didn't work this time. So, if he just waits one minute, he can do the whole act again and maybe get a whistle. So, I guess my problem is that the players need to grow some balls and act like a man.

That is really my ONLY beef with the sport which I otherwise really enjoy watching on tv, but everytime someone does that, I can't help but cringe and want to punch the player in the face.

What AJ said. I used to respect soccer a great deal... until I actually started wathing it. I figured it was one of the sports that actually required, and would build, great fitness. Then I started watcing it and realized most of either team is basically standing around and/or barely jogging so much of the time. THEN there's the wimpy "tackles." Fer cryin' out loud...

Am. football does not require great fitness of all it's players. However, in terms of toughness, nothing else even comes close. Even hockey. Football is a nasty-bad sport. Those that play it with professionalism can make you proud. All the #$%^ talking drives me nuts, though. I'm all about sportsmanship. Ah, but where is that in any sport these days? *sigh*

Roger that. Any sport where the fans are tougher than the players has some issues.

That's not a lack of toughness per se. That's called cheating. Not a good thing, but a completely different thing. You don't think the NFL line backers get dirty when they think they can get away with it?

If by "not all" you mean "all but the goalie" then yes, I agree. Do we say hockey is not a fitness oriented sport becuse the goalie doesn't move much? If you're talking pure cardio vascular fitness, then soccer is extremely fitness oriented. Any pro player would go out for a run 30 minutes, 45 minutes, one hour, take your pick, with any NFL guy, and smoke him. The NFL guys of course would smoke the footy players over 100 metres, and in lifting weights. Different kinds of fitness.
