This friday I am buying a notebeek computer. I have settled on an Averatec model for sale at E mart. I have been so frustrated at trying to find a computer that suits me here in Korea. All models that are "high end" are at least 1.5 million Won and dont include many "high end" features. And I cannot believe that they sell notebooks with Celeron processors for 1 million won and above. The Celeron is a shitty processor if you want to do anything besides emailing friends and casual web surfing.

if you're pretty new to korea, i would hold off on buying a computer. just use pc bangs until you're sure you will stay in country a long time.

The Celeron M is NOT a useless processor. But what they package with it usually isn't great. They now have 1 meg of cache, and are nearly everything that the Centrino is. The only difference being an extra layer of speedstepping on the Centrinos (a layer seldom utilized) and 2 meg of cache.

Many web sites now say it's a better bargain to buy a Celeron M and spend the savings on an extra battery, because the extra meg of cache doesn't help that much with most things, except some games (where you'll be more worried about an expensive computer with a good video card, anyway).

I edit video with Adobe Premiere on my Celeron M laptop, and it does quite well.

But yes, Korea's notebooks are way overpriced. Saw a dual-processor centrino LG X-note for sale in Lotte Dept. Store for something like 1.8 million. That would be a great thing to have.

By the way, you'll find your Avartec a hair cheaper at Wal-Mart (There is one not far from the last stop on the yellow line in Yong-in).

I hope you are aware that any computers you buy at e-Mart....and most places in Korea...will come fitted with the Korean-language versions of Windows and Microsoft XP Home package.

Such fun discovering this after you have laid out 1-2 mil won for a new computer.

Thanks for the tips BBE. I know the Celeron M is not entirely useless it just that it really irks me to spend so much money on a bummed down processor when in the States for what I spend on these machines I could buy a "supercomputer" in comparison. I also do lots of video editing and graphics editing as well as work with GIS systems. I have found that the Celeron processors are a tad it too slow for my tastes. I am going to cruise by the supercenter tonight and check out some of the prices. As for the windows op being in Korean I can always reinstall in my language version. If thats not possible I will just download a rougue copy in English, burn it on a disk and reinstall it.

The desktop Celerons are still kind of crap, although they did increase the cache size a bit. Still not worth it to buy a desktop celeron, though.

OH! I saw a deal for you at Carrefour (was at the one in Bundang this weekend). They had an IBM Thinkpad notebook with a Celeron M 1.5 for 900,000 won. It came with 512 of ram and a 60 gig Hard Drive (might have been 80, but I think 60). CD/DVD Player combo (not sure it burns anything, though). I would buy that over the Averatec any day. IBMs are pretty good quality. On the cheap (for Korea) this is a pretty good deal.

I have an Averatec model with a Sempron processor, which I have no clue about. The Averatec works good for the wife and me, though it is mosting writing reports, playing games, music, and surfing....
