Stay Away from Korean recruiters!

Damn these people are bad news lol. Some of them are so crooked, it's like they don't even care about English teachers. I spoke to a few lately and boy...I can hardly understand what they're saying hehe. If you want to work in a hawkwon than i'm sure you will find a job but any reliable good ones you will get one from friends you know. Best recruiters are the ones from your Country who speak English and understand what you are looking for. Just watch out for these recruiters I gathered up a few from blacklists.

NetKorea
Ilovesl in toronto he's Korean lol

Just curious what you expect from a recruiter?

Not talking about you in general, but the way some people talk, they expect the recruiter to do everything, including hold their wee-wee while they take a leek.

Recruiters match people to jobs. You need to understand that this country, in general, is probably much less trustworthy than back home.

You can't rely on the recruiter to make sure the job is going to be perfect. You have to do your own homework. Also, don't expect the recruiter to be able to find you something if you are not what Korean bosses are looking for. It's just a sad fact.

Never rely on one recruiter. It's the same as buying a used car. Shop around, look at their inventory, make no promises, and don't let yourself be pushed into something by the old, "This job will go to someone else today if you don't commit now" line.

I might want them to hold my shovel, or my clippers, or whatever other tools I need to "take a leek," but I think that even when taking a leak, as a girl, they can keep their hands off!

If he's the recruiter in Busan then I have to say I was satisfied with the help he gave me.

I gave him the criteria I wanted and he found me a shortlist of jobs which matched them, I then narrowed that down to two and he helped me get the phone numbers of past teachers.

When I arrived in Korea, he and two assistants drove me to the apartment and introduced me to the director.

Everything went okay.

The key is to be firm and clear about what you need and what you will put up with. I sense if someone is unsure and wishy-washy, then he - or any recruiter - will try to cram whatever garbage position they can down your docile passive throat. Give the impression that if you don't get exactly what you need, you'll walk. Don't settle for less and demand what you feel you need and can get.

spinner: You've got to remember that recruiters are NOT working for you!!! They're working for the employer!!! Unless you're (note spelling!!!) willing to pay a fee for someone to find you a job, then you've got to be a little careful. Recruiters=used care salesmen is a perfect analogy!!

I've had no problems with Work and Play, its 8 months in and they're still there to help if i have a problem. They got me a job while I was in England and i've really enjoyed being in my school.

What bad experience did you have with them which has led you to warn us of em?

When you are correcting someone else's spelling mistakes, you seem much cooler if you don't make any yourself. Wink

We should have a contest--using a fake name of course, sending out the worst resume imaginable, seeing who still gets a job offer. At least 3-4 illegal items must be on the resume. Mafia work, gun-running, etc.

I used NetKorea and they were great.

On a related note in another thread you said that you would never use a Korean recruiter so why do you care?

I don't, i'm just warning people of bad experiences. Some recruiters are good some are bad. Live with it. Just because you had a good experience doesn't mean everyone else did. When I spoke to them I found them completely unprofessional. Maybe we have different standards, but when a recruiter advertises a school to the mass, maybe they should include that female teachers are preferred, not lie to you after saying you're not good enough, because you're male. I find that sexist and inapporpriate. I know the culture is different and that's normal but I'm not going stand there and be lied to and made an idiot out of if I can avoid it.

When you post an add on Dave's for a job your supposed to specify the specifics like everyone else. They didn't. Than they came back to me trying to offer me a crap job. What am I going to say, they're great?
I don't think so, and stop trying to excuse them because their from a different culture and you got a job off them. If they're good enough to make money off us than they should have some business saavy and proper etiquette when they deal with teachers from abroad. I don't have to hold their hand. This is simple professionalism. Do I hate them? NO..I would just never want to deal with them again.

I would like to see your reaction if you had that experience so don't sit there thinking they are so great. Had the school not wanted you in the end who knows how NETKOREA would have handled it.

Pal you got lucky, but don't speak for other people.
