I had to post this and dont know why I didn't do so sooner.
I'm just back from a visa run to Osaka. Last time I did a visa run I noticed that I had to fill out an annoying arrival card before entering Japan.
However one was not required when reentering Korea from Japan.
This time however, I had to fill out the new Korean equivalent(s)
I'm sure there are those that will argue that the ROK's reason for this is security and the well-being of their state but I can't help thinking this is another classic example of Korea trying to copy and out do Japan.

I had to fill out not one 2 cards this time when entering Korea from Japan as opposed to zero last time!

1. An arrivals card - strikingly silmilar to the Japanese one but more deatailed - 'I came from x on flight xyz and I'm staying at wherever...for
x number of years..'

2.
A customs card - 'Im not bringing weapons or drugs etc. into Korea..'

I placed a bet with myself that they wouldn't properly check either of these cards. They didn't. I'm quite sure I could have wrote 'mickey mouse' on either card and it would have been overlooked - especially the customs form.

To be honest I find this cute, yet also childish nonsensical tit for tat.

Anyone else experience or here about this?

just yesterday, Japan waived tourist visa requirements for Korean citizens, so they wouldn't be playing a paper war with them now. Besides, I had to fill out the same papers when I returned from China a month ago

I first arrived in Korea three years ago and have reentered more than a half dozen times since then, and I have always had to fill out two cards (one arrival and an attached future departure card) as well as a customs card when entering Korea. There is nothing new about them at all. Most countries require them, not just Japan. In fact, I can't think of any Asian country that doesn't have you fill out an arrival card. And every country is the same for not checking it too carefully. The immigration officer who checked you last time must have forgotten to ask you for it.

Just yesterday(well a few days ago in fact) I had to fill out 2 forms that in my opinion are unnecessary. Sorry, but I'm afraid you merely gave me an alternate heading for my original thread subject.
Actally to me it goes like this.

Korean political dude #1: "Hmmm. Japan requires our sacred citizens to complete an arrival card prior to entering their evil country. Lets' reciprocate."

Korean political dude #2: "Wait. Better not do that now. Lets wait til they decide to waive the touristvisa requirement first. Otrherwise they might change their mind."

Korean political dude #1: "Asssssaaa. And while we're at it we'll also require them to fil out an irritating customs card."

Korean political dude #2: "Go Han".

I've been to Japan twice; once a year ago and once two and a half years ago. I've never entered Korea without filling out those cards, regardless of what country I was arriving from. I can't explain why you weren't made to fill one out before.

The arrival card is not a Japanese concept. As I said, they are very common throughout the world. Here are some other countries' arrival/departure cards:

Thailand

Philippines

Saudi Arabia

United States

Canada

Burma/Myanmar

Morocco

Taiwan

Bahamas

I agree that there is a lot of pettiness in Korea's relations with japan, but this isn't one of them. Having people fill out arrival cards is very standard throughout the world.
