Is it standard to include "no private tutorings while working at this school" clause in contracts? Why don't employers want you to teach privately? Shouldn't it be okay as long as it does not affect your teachings at the school?

I guess it is illegal to have other part time jobs with an E2 visa......Is it illegal even if you have a F4 visa?

E2 or F4, this isn't fair!!!

Because it is illegal....hence you would be breaking the law and they are liable for it as they sponsor your work visa..in the case of an E-2 that is.

Now, if you have a F-type visa you might be able to teach private lessons if you register with the government and pay tax on the income.

They put it in the contracts because it's illegal on an E-2 visa (it's legal if you have an F2-1 though) and if you get caught or dobbed in to immigration, you'll get deported and both you and the school will have to pay a fine.

Also, the school will lose you as teacher and it's very expensive to find, hire, and fly over a new teacher. Not to mention the fact that it'll take 3 weeks (at least) or more to find a new teacher and during that time without a foreign teacher the parents will complain and they'll lose students.

Losing students=losing money.

I'm not justifying it. I think it's a stupid law. In Japan you can legally do privates, no one cares but here it's a different story.

I advise against it, especially because immigration now gives a 2,000,000 won reward for dobbing in teachers working illegally. It's not just Koreans you have to worry about dobbing you in either. I know of teachers who have been dobbed in by co-workers and the co-workers have been paid the 2,000,000 won by immigration. Its just not worth the risk these days and immigration is cracking down on it big time.

Also, you just cause more problems for teachers here who are working legally. It just keeps perpetuating the bad reputation of foreign teachers here.

If you can get an F-series visa, you're set here. Get your F-4, Korean Child, and do whatever you want here, workwise. Now go. Evil or Very Mad

That last sentence is funny..."straight answer from Immigration." That would be nice if we could get a straight answer from them!

Listen, I think you know the answer to your own question.

Stop bugging me about being a foreigner, go look up your hojeok and eat your kimchi chigae.

Well...ya can! Laughing

You just have to approach immigration like you would any governmental bureaucracy and that is the key to obtaining a "straight answer". If the first officer you call is a dumbo then get transfered higher up the food chain or go in person to an immigration office.

Of course, if you start screaming at the guy (or girl) you will get nothing. If your Korean is not good enough to ask yourself, get a good Korean friend to help out.

@BigBuds, could you please post further information about how to make that 2,000,000 per snitch, that sounds a lot more lucrative than teaching privates. Are you serious about that? God, I could make 10,000 dollars tomorrow! Hope to here more about this!

Yes it works too. But you have to keep your goal in mind: cooperation from a bureaucrat....

I've read alot of posts about public school teachers filling up their time by doing privates in the school. Now they say it's legal. How does it work? Do you ask the principle and he givess you the ok and you do extra classes paid for by the parents? I know you can do extra classes for x number of won but can you really do pirvates? How would you go about doing it? Thank you in advance.
