i took a nasty spill on the ice today, and landed hard on my back. now it's annoying to breathe, and very painful to yawn. is this something that i should get checked out? if i do have a cracked rib or two, is there any way to treat that outside of just waiting?
thanks. |

I have been on the ass end of a few cracked and broken ribs before and the thing to remember is you never know just what might be happening on the inside. Typically the doctor will boot you out of his office and tell you to piss off after checking to make sure that nothing is amiss. If the ribs had punctured a lung you would probably coughing up blood, if not something worse.
The other thing to know is if it was broken or even cracked it would not just be sore it would hurt like hell. Chances are you just bruised yourself up nicely and that spot will be tender for a few days. I would say go the doctor is you are suffering from actual pain rather than soreness. |

I also think that you should get it checked out, and right away.
It's quite possible that your rib is bruised, not broken.
Once, in a martial arts class, I took a kick in the ribs, and for several days it was uncomfortable to breathe and sleeping was difficult. However, it wasn't broken, just bruised.
But don't take any chances. |

I would get it checked as well. Unfortunately the best they can do is strap it to restrict movement. But if you know its officially broken then you might be more careful with what you do until it heals. I feel for ya, I dislocated my rib in December and it still hurts to sneeze and hiccough! |

I had a broken rib once and this sounds like good advice. I would describe it a really intense pain for a few days followed by pain and discomfort for over a month. Breathing, using the restroom, walking up stairs, even sleeping can be miserable. You should see a doctor, but don't expect much. Mine gave me some codeine and told me to come back in two weeks to be sure it was healing properly. Hope it isn't as painful for you as it was for me. |

It's always best to have those kinds of things checked. I know it's tempting to be a cheapskate and try to ignore it (I've done my share of that in the past), telling yourself that nothing's wrong, but that attitude can get you into a lot of easily avoidable trouble. Your health is too important to take risks. |

yeah... i guess it's not cracked. i've never cracked or broken anything before, so i don't have a level of pain to compare this to. it's not excruciating. maybe i'll get it checked out tomorrow. thanks, all. |

"annoying to breath" and "painful to yawn" are not something to be taken lightly. You're probably ok and just sore somewhere. I'm not doctor, so...
You landed on your back so it's doubtful you broke a rib. Chances are you'll be ok being careful and waiting it out, but I wouldn't.
I actually pulled something couging one night a few months back. That was crazy. I coughed really hard and felt a snap in my lower side and after it hurt to cough and sneeze, It eventually went away though. I blame it on sitting on a kitchen chair deal in a bad position while using my computer (and lack of exercise). Anyway, it freaked me out. |

Put some hot sauce on it and you'll be fine. |

They don't even do that any more.
I badly fractured my sternum over a decade ago, and even after 5 years if I sneezed violently enough I could hear a little sort of pop and grind in my chest...
I was in a serious car accident and had to be pried out by the fire department. Blood was everywhere and it felt like my chest had collapsed.
There was shattered safety glass everywhere, some of it embedded in various parts of me due to the force of the impact.
In the ambulance I honestly thought I was going to die before reaching the hospital, I couldn't breathe...
So they clean me up, remove all the embedded glass, give me pain killers, lots of stitches, and I'm out for the night. The next day the doctor tells me I fractured my sternum and it's a miracle my chest didn't collapse, I'm very lucky to be alive, etc.
So I ask him how come they didn't tape up my ribs or anything
"It doesn't help, we don't do that anymore for ribs" he said.
"We're releasing you now, you can recooperate at home."
WTF?!? I nearly died and have a broken sternum.
"So doctor, my sternum is broken, what should I do?"
"Don't do any thing that hurts" was his answer.
WTF?!? Just breathing hurts!!!
So yeah, unless you're coughing up blood, or hearing bones grinding, or you have a 100% medical coverage (your average medical coverage is not 100% in Korea), then don't bother going to a clinic/hospital. |

A broken rib can poke your innards. A ruptured spleen is no fun. Get an x-ray. |

But a compound fracture (i.e. one that can 'poke innards') isn't a case of "gee, maybe I cracked a rib", is it?
So in this case I can't see the sense of taking time and money to go to the hospital to get xrays taken... |
