For those of you with experience in the field, could you help me out with this minor issue? This latest contract I've gotten has this clause in there where I will be required to work two intensive language instructions sessions in the month of August and December. I will have to teach from 930AM-730PM (straight I believe, not split) but will get paid overtime. This isn't normal is it? Should I even bother asking them to take it out of the contract, or just move on? Why can't I seem to find a contract that doesn't have some strange clause like this in it? Otherwise, it's a pretty solid contract. My normal schedule would be 3PM-9PM. Thanks for the advice in advance. |

Sorry, but this is normal for many hakwons. These are known as "intensive classes" In December and August the students have time off from their public school classes. That's why you start at three usually (you teach them AFTER they have been at their public school all day)
But in those two months (Dec and Aug) they have their public school vacations (one month or so apiece). Hakwons though that's a difference story. Many even jack up their prices for these months since the child is taking more English classes/being taught solely by a foreigner...whatever excuse they tell the parents. It is possible to find a hakwon that doesn't do intensives (my last two didn't) but they tend to be in small towns. Most big city hakwons do intensives because of the competition.
The upside to this is that you usually get paid a lot more than your usual wage. Once I received 2.6 instead of my normal 2 million, which was nice. And you will/should get a lunch break or two in there somewhere...insist on one hour. |

The winter intensive course might more likely be in January. I don't know about elementary schools, but middle and high schools usually have winter 'break' from late December to mid February. Similarly the summer one may be in July - check the dates carefully if you're going to be planniong holidays around them. |
