http://www.efl-law.com/tax_rates.doc

I obtained this chart of www.efl-law.com . Hopefully this helps. There's an employee at my school who's paid 1,800,000 KRW per month (It's not me either). After monthly taxes are taken into account, he rakes in about 1,690,000 KRW. He does not have health insurance either, and I know that for a fact. He is not taxed for the Korean Pension Fund either. I do believe he's getting jipped! He's been "laid off" at the end of his 5th month and has to go back to the UK. His boss says he cannot pay him until the 15th. He does have a place to stay in Seoul with friends. Payday for him is on the 10th of every month. His boss originally said he would pay him on the 8th of this month though. His boss will write him a letter of release, will let him stay as long as he wants to find another job. I am at a loss to words. His boss will pay him one months salary, plus half of severance. What would you do?

I guess it depends on what your friend wants to do. Besides the high tax, it seems like the hakwon boss is trying to do sth for your friend. The boss is actually not required to give any kind of severance unless the year contract is completed, so that's something. The letter of release is good, too. At least your friend isn't req'd to try to buy it or beg for it. If I were your friend, I'd get the LoR and cash in hand before going anywhere. If interested in working elsewhere in Korea, I would've been looking a few days ago.

I concurr with your opinion. Part of me was also thinking, "screw the old fart over."
