What kind of plug-ins do I need to get bit torrents to play and where do I get them. Also is there a specific player I need or will it play on my Quicktime or Windows Media Player. Also what's the best torrent site for Mac. So far I've not been able to get any torrent to play and I've given up trying.

Thanks,

These sites might help:

http://www.bittorrent.com/ (for your downloader) Click "Download the BitTorrent Client (not on windows?")

http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm (to unpack the files)

Make sure you choose the Mac downloads. I've never used a Mac and I also don't know what you're downloading. If you have windows media player on your mac, it should be able to open most videos that you d/l.

Don't know what else I can tell you.

*takes a deep, somewhat calming breath* Obviously I have a bittorrent, that's not a problem. And you can't accidently download a PC file. Anything .EXE won't open, let alone open, install, run and then not work properly. I am however, apparently missing some plug-ins, as per my question. And when I downloaded a wmf. it says it will only play on the version available for Windows.

So, if anyone can actually answer my question, I would be appreciative.

wmv file? Should play. Maybe you have a corrupt file. Try downloading it again.

Maybe a couple of these sites can give you the info you're looking for:

http://plugindoc.mozdev.org/OSX.html

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10758

http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=206216

Sounds like you have a strange problem there. Best of luck.

I'm not sure if I'm clear about your question. You are able to download torrents but are unable to play them, is that it?

If this is the case and you want to watch what you're downloading, get yourself VLC Media Player. That sucker will play just about any media type.

That's about it. I download them, AVI, Mpg and WMF and none of them play. I downloaded your VLC player, tried to play a WMF that I'd tried to play after getting the Flip4Mac player from the previous post and it didn't play that one, either. It says this:

Quote:
main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

I get the same kind of error message, well not exactly the same, but similar, whenever I try to play anything downloaded from bittorrent. An encoding or decoding error, sometimes accompanied by a number with a minus sign in front of it. It's quite frustrating.

Well, I just don't know what to tell you then. I don't d/l all that much from torrents, just a few tv shows (from tvtorrent.com), always .avi's, and they always - and only - work with the VLC player. I don't think I've come across a .wmf file, only .wmv's. Can you send me a link to one? I'd like to try it and see what happens for myself.

I can generally get other mpg's and windows media files to work, either with Quicktime or W.M.P., or as a last resort with VLC.

1) Which version of the Mac OS are you using?
2) Have you got all the latest software updates from Apple?
3) Can you not find the shows/movies you want to see in other formats, like .avi's?

I'd be supremely frustrated, too. Hope you can get it worked out.

I'm running the latest version of everything. I'm on OSX 10.4.4, quicktime is up to date, as well as my WMP. The Flip4Mac thing actually works over WMP, which is cool because WMP sucks donkey balls.

Typo on my part, they're WMV files, for some reason I always call them WMF files. I'll try to find some AVI files to see if they're working. One time I searched specifically for mpg files and find one and downloaded it and even that one wouldn't play, so I dunno. Thanks for the advice though.

Have you checked your QuickTime MIME settings? If not, open up System Preferences, then QuickTime, Advanced, MIME settings. Make sure you have the appropriate boxes checked to play the various codecs (MPEGS, AVIs etc).

Also, do you have DivX installed? If not, go here: -
