Hi

my friend is coming over to work and I don't know what to tell her about using her PC with the internet here. She's bringing a laptop and wants to know if she must back up all her stuff and prepare to re-load Windows from scratch (Korean windows) or if she can just plug in without any system reloading?

I think a few cds make for a cheap back up plan but I don't know whether there will be conflicts between Windows XP sold in North America and trying to access the internet via the local internet service.

Please help.

I don't think so...

Every foreign teacher at my school who brought a computer has problems accessing the internet with the local service. I'm not sure why though. I just thought it was a standard problem like doesn't read Korean interfaces or what-not. I have heard more than once that somebody has to install Korean Windows I just wanted to know if there's a way around it.

Are you saying you brought a computer from the West, plugged it in and had no problems with KTF or another cable internet service?

I access the Internet with my laptop at home and at seven different schools which use different providers and varying types of networks. I've never had a problem.

I've never heard of a person having a problem (that does not mean they don't exist). I brought mine over, and I catch on to wireless networks everywhere. A signal, is a signal, is a signal.

I work with someone who bought a new laptop in Canada, and when he brought here he just plugged in, got on line and never had any problems.

The XP code and file names the same. Only the text is different. I routinely fix bad Windows loads/issues with an English disk on Korean computers, etc.

The issues you will have might be with 3rd party networking software. For example, the system at my school uses computers running everything from Windows 95 on up. The main computer is running NT of some version, in Korean. When I branch off and try to locate things like printers on my English XP version, the branches are gobbildy-gook. I was able to locate printers by choosing them and trying them out individually and seeing where stuff printed. Also, when trying to look at other computers on the network, the information printed on my screen about those computers was gobbildy-gook, and I wasn't able to access some of the computers running older Windows versions. The system at my school is old, and that is the issue.

I'd tell your friend to bring English XP, and the disks in English, and she can add the Korean IME to her software through the windows site for free. She an also buy an English/Korean keyboard, or key stickers, for a very small amount of money (10,000 won or less).

Also, if she wants, she can reinstall Windows in Korean, and use her current Windows ID number again during the reinstall, even though it is in Korean using a different install disk.

Complete instructions for loading the Korean IME to your English OS are here:
