| I know the feeling, I'm told over and over how great they are but there still is no arousal in me for The Clash. Same with Uma Thurman and Jessica Alba. I rather listen to PiL. |

The Ramones are more melodic than The Clash generally.
I'd start with the 2 punk albums first ('The Clash' and 'Give 'em Enough Rope).
Then 'London Calling' (which is much more commercial) and then 'Sandinista'. The latter is a double album that, like all double albums, has a lot of tiresome *beep* on there that shouldn't have made it. However it also contains some of their best work (Charlie don't surf, Somebody got murdered, loads more). It's not as hard and heavy as the earlier stuff, much more melodic and contains a lot of styles like Reggae and even psychedelic-sounding stuff. Then get 'Combat Rock' which has 'Should I stay or should I go?' and 'Rock the Kasbah' - two total classics. I don't rate 'Combat Rock' that much, but if you don't like those two famous songs there's no hope for you really.

As for the rest of it, I'm with Skinny.
Bo, if you have to 'try to get into it' you have to
1) ask yourself why, and
2) realize that if you've been trying for at least the last 10 years, why would it suddenly 'take' now?
I don't wonder why I can't get into Abba or the Bee Gees or Franz Ferdinand, and I don't "try to get into" 50 Cent.
Life's too short and there's too much good music out there to force yourself to listen to something you don't like.
And besides, if you want to get into the Clash you should start with Jimmy Cliff, or maybe Eddy Grant & the Equals... |

My favorite song of theirs is still Guns of Brixton. I just love it.
I got into the Clash back a few years when I was studying in England. My hall-mate was a big fan of theirs and he played me some. I fell in love that night and haven't looked back. I've got all of their albums except for Sandinista. I can't say as there is a single album I don't like, but there are a couple of songs that don't suit me.
Great stuff, a must for just about any music fan.

Gabba gabba hey = melodic.
The Ramones ARE melodic and if you dispute that then you're a bloody weirdo to be quite frank.
Speaking of Franz Ferdinand, they're truly awful live. That guy CANNOT sing to save his life!
It's also a nonsense that if you've never liked something you never will. I always thought Led Zeppelin were totally overrated. How wrong can a guy be? Led Zepp are fookin awesome! OP needs to give the Clash more of a shot. If you like Punk then there's just NO WAY you can not like 'White Riot', 'Complete Control' and 'London's Burning'. And if you like melodic, atmospheric Rock, you'll like many tracks on 'Sandinista'. |

London Calling was a double LP, Sandinista was a triple LP. |

And there you have my "just couldn't get into them" group: U2. (U2, I just couldn't get N2U.) Boy and War were the only albums I liked enough to buy, though I've heard nearly all the rest on radio and from friends. |
