Guards for McArthur angers civic groups
Anti-U.S. demonstrations took place in the the park in 2002 and 2003, according to the police. Three officers have been detailed to guard the statue around the clock. Civic groups in Incheon want the statue to be moved to another location so police will not waste time and energy on the mission.

How do you spell his name? I guess the writer does not want to check.
General Douglas MacArthur, was commander of Allied Forces in the Southwest Pacific during World War II, commander of the Allied Forces during the occupation of Japan, and commander of United Nations (U.N.) forces during the first nine months of the Korean War.

MacArthur led the U.N. coalition counter-offensive, noted for an amphibious landing behind North Korean lines in the Battle of Inchon.

Man, I can't believe anyone in Inchon is even considering moving that statue- it's the centrepiece of Freedom Park. What they should do is get someone to clean it- the last time I saw it it was completely covered in pigeon shit.
(I suppose they could quite easily move it to a fine spot at the Inchon Landing Memorial or the neighbouring municiple museum...) |

No doubt... Now there's a problem with the freakin' MacArthur statue?!? It's not like the inscription on the thing says, "Now your peninsula is belong to US! Bwahaha! I loves the neo-colonialism!"
Really, though- any problems people may have had with the guy aside- he was pretty much a hero figure to many S. Koreans back in that generation. They still refer to those big aviator (are they aviator) sunglasses as "MacArthur" glasses.... I'm not saying that Koreans should all be kow-towing to the US miliary for the rest of time, but that statue is an appropriate nod of recognition to a military maneuver (the Incheon landing) that kept these guys from what's now going on up North... Leave the ol' guy alone! |

Remove the guards, it's a statue. It's not going to get offended if someone insults it and Koreans aren't big on de-facing public property. leave it for the pigeons. |

The "guards" wouldn't happen to be of the stringbean pimple faced variety like you see out the front of some ATM's at night, would they? That lot could be beaten into submission by a bunch of girl guides wielding tennis rackets. |

Leave it there until Koreans learn how to pronounce MacArthur.
Hint: it's not ƾƴ. |

Form your own civic group.
You could be the civic group that protests the protests of civic groups. |

He saved Koreans asses twice (and Australians once), frigging disrespectful buggers
First time in WW2 when he forced the Japanese back from the pacific(making japan surrender and withdrawing from Korea)
Secomd time he cut the supply route in the Korean war making the North Koreans fall back.
If there is any man who Koreans should thank it is him.
How about a bit of respect you idiot hangukins. |

They don't like the statue?!?
Of all the things these civic groups can complain about; poverty, orphanages, prostitution, they decide to target the statue of a general who saved the country from going "red", so to speak?
My God.

That's because they are the deluded folks who think that going red isn't such a bad thing. There's a lot of politics mixed up in those civic groups, more than enough to undermine the occasional good work that they do. |
