Pitt Critical of Stem Cell Researcher
A U.S. stem-cell expert committed "research misbehavior" in his work with a now-disgraced South Korean scientist, but his actions don't constitute scientific wrongdoing, university investigators said Friday.... Schatten remains a tenured professor and active researcher at the university, officials said.

Hwang and Co-Authors Relieved of Duties
All seven Seoul National University professors involved in fabricating the papers on stem cells the discredited cloning expert Hwang Woo-suk published in the U.S. journal Science will be relieved of their duties, a far harsher penalty than expected. They remain professors but cannot lecture or supervise research.

Schatten Accused of Reaping Hwanggate Windfalls
Korean biologists claim the country's disgraced cloning scientist Hwang Woo-suk's downfall was aggravated by an "ill-fated" partnership with Prof. Gerald Schatten at the University of Pittsburgh.

The magazine said what matters in Europe is whether an invention is novel, inventive and sufficiently described, while fraud is not grounds for invalidating a patent.

Well of course it couldn't have actually been Hwang's fault. I was wondering how they would try to blame the nasty Americans. No surprise at all--wouldn't really expect anything less than a Korean trying to shift blame. |

True. I think the patent for the laser was filed before there was a working model. The guy (Gordon Gould) who originally thought up the laser mistakenly thought he needed to have a working model before filing. And he lost his patent to Bell Labs (who are rather sophisticated about patent applications). And Leó Szilárd received a British patent for nuclear fission, long before anyone created an atomic pile. (Szilárd filed the patent under the mistaken belief he could use it to control and limit what he understood would lead to a very dangerous weapons technology.)
Hwang is true to type. He's still the honest scientist. Too honest. Too trusting. His subordinates scammed him! If he's guilty of anything, it's he is guilty of trusting too much! Oh sure he takes ultimate responsibility... boo hoo.
What I loved was when they did an audit on what he did with the millions of dollars he got from the government and private industry. The auditors threw up their hands. They couldn't follow his complicated paper trail. They assumed Hwang was a typical scientist and unsophisticated in matters of banking. Of course as any Korean professor knows, it's all about salting funds away for personal use in shell companies and accounts... |
