Forgive me for not scouring the archives.

I want to go to Thailand in May and I was hoping someone could suggest an island that's not too busy or crowded where I can just hang out on the beach or walk around without being bothered. I'm totally overwhelmed by the Thorn Tree on lonleyplanet.com, but I'm hoping it's because it's so late at night.

Koh Samet seems to be what you are looking for...bus from Bangkok (Ekamai terminal), or some hotels have a shuttle to Rayong (I think) where you can get a boat. Be prepared to walk to the National Park. Cheap bungalows, lots of dogs, chickens, etc..., open-air bars and food grilled to order. Very relaxed atmosphere if you avoid the resorts with the Chinese package tour crowd.

kind of a vague post/ question and i'm not familar with the latest gossip on lonelyplanet.

why are you going to thailand? short trip/ long trip? r&r? jungles, beaches, snorkel, culture, photography? girls?

there are dozens of islands but it depends on what you want. hmmm ... quiet islands -- try koh phi phi or koh tao.

I suppose I'll just jump in on this thread rather than starting another one asking for Thai travel tips (always avoid alliteration).

Mine's a very basic question, though. Where's the best place to find good cheap airfare to Bangkok from Korea? I keep hearing about people who get there and back for anywhere between 250,000 to 500,000won, but the cheapest I've been able to find has been upwards of 800,000-900,000. Any help?

Also, choice destinations would be good. We'll be going in May as well, just for a few days, and we'd like to see some sights, but not get stuck in a really touristy-type area where all we can see are cheap souvenirs and other travellers. This Koh Samet place seems like it might be right up our alley. Are there any more details available for that place?

Thanks alot!

That's waaay too much for Bangkok. Try a discount travel agent, like Top Travel. There are several branches. The one I know best is in Shinchon just above "A Twosome Place" coffee shop at the Shinchon Intersection. Also, if you're going to go in May, that's getting close to the rains, so check the climate details about the places you plan to go to.

There's a thread about the climate conditions on lonelyplanet.com under the Thorn Tree. I'll be going right at the beginning of the rainy season.

I'm using Kangsan Travel out of Pusan. One of my friends used them and she likes them.
