Korean OECD Officials Face Withdrawal for Poor English
The Civil Service Commission said Friday it will withdraw government officials dispatched to the Organization for Economic Development (OECD) in Paris who are found to lack the language skills needed to work effectively at the Paris-based organization.
The announcement comes in response to a highly critical evaluation by the OECD of South Korea's program of seconding government officials with "serious problems" communicating in English to the organization.

Ffff. And the president of Korea won't talk to English newspaper reporters unless they speak Korean. Korean is a great language 'n' all but it's wholly useless for dealing with the rest of the world. If you want to run the UN, you're all gonna have to learn to speak one of the lingua francas. |

He said a lack of English-language skills and global awareness limited the usefulness of the officials, noting that the time spent supervising the program was ``very heavy to absorb'' for the organization. |
