There are positions available for me at Sung-Myung Elementary School (Seoul) and CDI. The former pays 2.3, 1 month off, 26 hours per week and the latter hasn't sent me the contract yet. Does anyone know anything about these two schools? I've heard mixed reviews on CDI, how exactly does it work?

You guys/gals rock!

Cheers,

You guys/gals rock! Don't flatter us. Post the contract hat you have received, and let us hammer down on it. After we do that, you will have a good idea what kind of hagwon your dealing with.

Yes, take your chances with a public school over a CDI.

The "you guys/gals rock" was not ment as flattery it was a statement of fact because with this site and you people here most of us would be very very lost.

Here are the CDI contracts (2 options, both suck in my opinion, these arn't even contracts, they seem like offers and they want me to sign away....I'm starting to really dislike those guys after my 2 hour interview).

Your thoughts please...

- 29,000 KRW per teaching hour (guaranteed minimum of 24 teaching hours per week)
- Airfare reimbursement of 1,000,000 KRW
- 5,000,000 KRW housing key money loan
- fully paid accommodation during the training session (lodging, meals, transportation)*
- 300,000 KRW extra relocation bonus (only applicable for candidates accepting positions in Daegu, Suwon, Annyang, and Daejeon)
- E-2 visa sponsorship and airfare for visa run if needed
-7 days unpaid vacation per year (after completion of 2 full terms)
* Applicable only for Camp Training participants. Candidates training in the Seoul Main Training facility will receive free lodging and 200,000 KRW bonus only. CDI holds all discretions regarding all training logistics and location for the candidates.

Upon signing and faxing the MOU, the instructor has 7 days to purchase a flight ticket to arrive in Korea on the specific dates in accordance with training session you will be attending (to be determined). Once purchased, you must email or fax your itinerary to secure the position. Instructor MUST bring with them 2 sealed official transcript, the original college diploma (not copies), copy of the passport, and two passport photos.

Absence of these documents will null and void all current and previous employment offers made by CDI

By signing below, you agree to undergo official CDI training to acquire the CDI instructor certificate prior to being fully employed at CDI schools. Refusal of training and/or deliberate poor performance as determined by CDI will null and void any and all offers made by CDI.

Contract option 2
2.4 million KRW per month for 120 teaching hours (to be determined based on experience and evaluation upon completion of training)
- Airfare reimbursement of 1,000,000 KRW
- Paid housing
- fully paid accommodation during the training session (lodging, meals, transportation)*
- 300,000 KRW extra relocation bonus (only applicable for candidates accepting positions in Daegu, Suwon, Annyang, and Daejeon)
-50/50 medical insurance and pension
-1 month severance pay at end of 1-year contract
-E-2 visa sponsorship and airfare for visa run if needed
-7 days paid vacation per year

I work at a public school and except for the relocation bonus, I am getting everything you are getting in option 2 (but more vacation time) for 88 hours a month. Plus I am getting round-trip airfare (fully paid) should I sign on again.

I'd go for the public school job.

"2.4 million KRW per month for 120 teaching hours (to be determined based on experience and evaluation upon completion of training) " Not sure what this means. Less than 2.4 per month? Less or more hours for 2.4? This needs to be clarified.

2.4 million/120h= 20000won/hour plus severance. (29000 X 24)X4= 2.78 million (no severance?!). I'd also ask to see the housing they provide and would check if it's possible to find an affordable home on your own before making a decision between option 1 or 2.

I guess you could also call the labor board to ask if the contract follows the law.
