|
|
Just wondering if most people get their employers to pay for their one-night accomodation while waiting for the visa?
It seems only fair as it's a necessary travel expense?
What do we think?
My last run (a year ago) was a one-day affair, but the school still payed for the airplane ticket, rapid train, visa fee and food!
My new school will only pay for the ticket! Cheap b@#$%^^s!!
Anyone else have this problem??
P.S. I work for a Gyeonggi Public HS |

I only did a visa run to Osaka once. The place that I was going there to get the visa for was one of the bigger name places and were cheap...only airfare, and they didn't really like the fact that they had to pay a little extra to send me to Osaka instead of Fukuoka(sp?)...their own fault for waiting too long to book a flight. I've heard lots of other people who had everything paid for. The time I went, I was hanging out with a fella who was keeping all his receipts because he supposedly was going to be reimbursed...not sure if that happened or not. Guess it depends on what kind of deal you can swing with your school...what does the contract say? |

Did they already reimburse you for your airfare or were you hired in Korea? |

No, I bought the ticket on my own credit card, but they say they'll reimburse me upon return - which I do trust. But they are refusing to cover my hotel cost for one night, nor will they pay for anything else.
I'm just wondering if my old school was especially generous (paid for everything incld food) or if my new school are particularly tight?!
(I don't go until next Mon.) |

If you were living outside Korea and then flew to Korea to take up this position and the school has already reimbursed you for your International flight, then I wouldn't expect them to pay for a visa run.
However, if you were already in the country when you were hired I would expect them to pay for the whole visa run. |

The schools should pay for the whole visa run IMHO. This is a matter between the schools and their government. As foreigners we have no power to lobby the korean governemnt to change visa laws. |

The school should give a per diem to cover the hotel or state ahead of time how much it will pay for accomodation. Since the school owns the visa, not you, it is the school's business expense. |

Well put.
However, I'd pay for my own hotel bill. I'd want to make a weekend of it and stay in something swanky |

my director paid for the ferry and hotel... I paid for the visa processing fee, taxis and buses in Fukuoka and from Busan to the town where the hagwon is.
works out to about half and half |

Thanks for the feedback.
As I said, my last school were great, but this new school will pay flight only. Which I think is unfair.
Not a major thing to make an issue of, I suppose. Just annoying. Thanks for the insights though!! |

I went to Fukoka in October. My boss paid everything ; hotel, flights, subway transport and even got me an international cell phone so I could call if there were any problems. When I got back to Korea, the trip had cost more than he gave me to spend, so he gave me some more cash to make up the difference....
This was about 2 weeks after he paid for me to fly here.
Hmmmm....my boss seems to be a good egg. I hope it lasts. |
