So, I have to say, after living here for a year, the one thing I will surely miss about Korea are the little kimbap restaurants... yeah, you know the ones I am talking about. They're always color coded, like the blue restaurant chain, or that orange restaurant... often with silly names like "Kimbap Mania" or "Kimbap love" or "Kimbap something..."
Now, in these little restaurants, you can usually get a decent, filling meal that is pretty healthy for around 4,000 won or less. You can get soups, rice-based dishes, and it seems like the variety keeps going up. I'm actually not that big a fan of kimbap, however, all the other things like dolsot bi-bim-bap, galbi tang, yuk-dae-jang, bulgogi bap, ... and the list goes on. While the food isn't tantalizing or amazing, it isn't bad either. Just pretty good... and fills you up fast if you're in a rush.
This is healthy fast food (for the most part, maybe not the cheese donkusu, & while the ramen isn't gonna make you too fat, the tong su yu maybe isn't the best either)...
I would seriously love it if when I go back to Canada, all the McDonalds, Burger Kings, and KFCs were replaced with little kimbap places! Not to mention the quick delivery service! I mean, I could even order a 2,000 won thing of Oo-dang noodles! Convenient, and not horribly bad for your health. In fact, most of the dishes at those kimbap places (such as dwen chang chigae, kimbap, kimchee sides) are normal healthy foods Koreans eat daily.
I guess I can't see Canada adopting kimchee & kimbap, but, really... we need to change the way we eat over there. Who's with me on the kimbap restaurants? That's one thing about Korea I'm all about... hehe... |

i agree. eating out in korea is a much more simple, healthier and affordable experience than dining in the west. and many of those places are open 24/7, at least in seoul. no tipping. free water, tea and coffee at many of them. spend a little more and get some real good korean food ... kalbi or sasheemi or kal gook soo. i'm so sick of american fast food crap and chain restaurants like tgi fridays and applebees. |

In Toronto, walking Bloor Street West from Christie station eastward to Bathurst station you can find a lot of Korean restaurants that serve those small meals, although no gimbab. You can find bibimbap and jayook bukum etc etc. and just south of Finch station on Yonge street you can find some mid-scale family restaurants (and a few Norae bangs)
I found one gimbab place on Yonge street walking south of York Mills station on the east side but they wanted 4 bucks for gimbab.
Yes it would be sweet wouldn't it? In related news, I just read today that a Big Mac possesses a formidable 33 grams of fat, 11 grams trans fat. -sigh-
which begs the question why are they always running on about how proud they are of our Olympic athletes? It's not like they eat Mickey D's! |

Hey brento, good news!
There is a kimbab restaurant in van (know that's where your from..michelle here, from halloween). It's on Seymore st. just north of hastings. I used to teach ESL to Korean adults in van and they took me there one day. So you can have your cake and eat kimbab too! |
