Car Racing at the Taebaek Circuit and the Chuncheon Motor Park
Breakneck speed, roaring motors, exhilarationThese are just some words that can be used to describe a car race.
The intense speed and noise of the race has you gripping the edge of your seat in excitement. Youre sure the cars are going to tip over as they tilt on two wheels and go screeching around the corners. Theres no doubt about it ? theres just some unexplainable force that seems to draw crowds to car races every day.
The severe conditions on the motorways of Korea have prompted people to learn safe and defensive driving skills. Some have taken this one step further and have begun exploring the thrilling world of car racing.
As technology and the standards of living have increased in Korea, it seems that car racing was the natural and most attractive progression. Take the F1 Grand Prix, for instance. Over 20,000 fans crowd into the stadium to witness the event and the subsequent commercial value is incredible. The Korean racing world, too, is, slowly, but surely, getting off its feet.
Koreas largest motor sports arena is the Taebaek Circuit. The circuit, which opened in April of last year with the 2003 Korea Road Race Championships, was also the host to the Korea/Japan Super Race Championships last June. The city of Taebaek is also currently working to design an Auto Park.
Another attraction in the world of car racing is off-road racing. There is very little difference between on-road and off-road racing, with the obvious exception of the track on which the cars are raced. It is safe to say that the history of car racing in Korea started with off-road racing. After all, thats where the majority of racing was done before the recent on-road circuits and tracks were put into place.
The Chuncheon Motor Park, which is located behind Yuklip Park, has been hosting car races since 1996. From the tense moment when the cars line up at the starting line, you can feel the tension mount as your eyes are riveted on the track throughout the entire, heart-stopping race.
The Chuncheon Motor Park is home to a 2.5km circuit, which is about 0.7km longer and 12~14m wider than the traditional off-road track. The track consists of 500m of straight road driving and 10 corners.
 Directions to Chuncheon Motor Park
From Seoul Take the Gyeongchun Highway Get off at the Chuncheon exit and make a left at the railroad tracks (towards Gongjicheon) and keep going straight When you see Lake Soyang on your left, cross the arched bridge (the Soyang 2 Bridge) Make a left at the sign for Hwacheon and continue going straight for another 3km Youll see an LG gas station and a sign for the Chuncheon Motor Park on your left Make a left turn in front of the gas station and take the road towards the Chuncheon Motor Park
 Directions to Taekbaek Circuit
From Seoul Take the Yeongdong Expressway Get on the S. Wonju interchange Pass the Jecheon tollgate Youll see Yeongwol/Danyang on your left When you get to the interchange, get in the right-hand lane Follow the signs to Yeongwol Then follow the signs for Taebaek

i saw a formula two (or was it F-3? looked like f-1 cars in shape but not size) international race in Changwon a couple of years back.
It was a pretty fun event, especially since I don't care much for cars or racing.
I think it goes on annually. |

wonder if there are any kind of novelty race car tracks around Seoul.. just the little go-karts even.
Would be fun to take a whirl around in those. |

Taebeck Isn't the first, Changwon had the F-3 for years here.
That was until last year, because all the of local residents complained of the noise and all the people. Come ON, it was for only one weekend a year. and brought lots of money into the city.

The reason the city doesn't have the race anymore is because their contract was finished with the FIA and Changwon didn't want to cough up the money for a 5 year contract....
Also it was deemed too late in the season and with it coming after macau most F3 teams didn't care for it too much and it became a second class event in its final year |

Ansan has a pretty decent race track that was scheduled to have hosted a race in the 2005 Champ Car World Series, but there was a "failure to comply with contract requirements" on the part of the Korean organisers so it was deferred to this year.
