Hello,
Can anyone help me with my job search? I am trying to find a list of good, reputable schools on Jeju Island. I've come across a lot of bad schools, but need help finding names and contact information for good schools.
I would work anywhere in Jeju-si, and Sogwipo.
Also, I've heard that Ding Dang Dong is a bad school to work for, can anyone provide me with more details?
Thanks, your help is appreciated!

Greetings,
I currently work for DDD in Sinjeju, and could help you with any questions if you email me directly at [email protected]. There is a posting in the Job center about the position that will be opening once I leave in March; DDD is not perfect, but I have been very happy with the way things turned out in my case. Feel free to write...

Thanks Here it is and Gorko for your advice. Much appreciated.
Another question I have is this: I am coming to Korea (hopefully Jeju) with my Husband. We both want to teach. Is it to our advantage to get hired at the same school, or is working for seperate schools in our best interest?
Also, do you think it would be really hard for both of us to find jobs on Jeju Island? (I hear it's a pretty popular destination for teachers).
Thanks again! |

Actually, a lot of schools in Korea advertise a preference to hire a couple. I've always found it a bit freaky, but it might even be to your advantage to try to get hired at the same school. You might even have a better chance that way than if you applied alone. |

All I know is that the university positions on Jeju are subpar at best. I've been following university working conditions and pay for years now, and the ones on Jeju always come out on the bottom of the heap. If you want to work at a university, I'd strongly suggest not wasting your time on Jeju. |

If you want a nice island with beautiful beaches, why not give the second largest island a try?
Geoje Island !
check out my avatar or check it out here: http://english.geoje.go.kr/03/04.jsp
I'm within minutes of seven of those eight beaches.
(Some of my favs aren't profiled in that link)
And it's only 50 minutes from Busan by ferry.
At least one great job opening available that I know of, a couple of others seem alright. |

Don't suppose there is a university on Geoje? Oh, and one that pays better and has better employment terms than Jeju National! Cheers. |

Each school is different, but I got myself the hell out of my old DDD once I figured out what the score is.
Much of their material is very poor. Their level 12 textbooks were ridiculous but I think they were making new ones. Their level 1-5 books are designed for little children but often taught to middle school beginners, which really sucks to teach.
Do you like to sing and dance? Myself and the other FTs there just refused to do this, but you may not be so lucky.
Do you like phone teaching? For lower level students its a torturous waste of time, and some DDDs make their teachers do it every week. Phone teaching is paid on a W500 / call basis if it involves overtime; this works out to about W5-10,000 / hour.
The biggest problem with the franchise, however, is that it operates under the delusion that learning English can be fun and productive at the same time, and gives nothing but BS to the parents. This makes for scores more disciplinary problems and a blame-the-teacher mentality.
Then there are the horror stories from certain franchises, like one in Daegu that left two teachers in an old apartment for no heat for two weeks during winter.
All-in-all, unless you want to be an English clown, you probably won't enjoy teaching there. You can do what one of my co-workers did and just be a lazy ass who plays games and doesn't give a damn what management thinks. However, is not an institution for teachers who actually want to teach. I've read up quite a bit on it (post-hoc, to my detriment) and it seems that only Wonderland has a worse over-all reputation. |

yeah... there MIGHT be some other places on Jeju you'd want to steer clear of that are just like DDD. If you really want to get some of the inside scoop, I recommend you read, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rhymeswithjeju/ |
