I just moved to Korea for a new Job and I am looking for information on getting a wireless connection for my laptop in my appartment. I dont know the rates and rules and was looking for some advice. I will only be here for like 6 months, then perhaps work some summer camps, which means I will leave my apartment by the end of July. Does anyone know anything about whats available and what some of the best rates are? So far i have heard quotes of like 50,000 wan a month, since I am here on a short term basis. |

Michael Hurt has a good post on the subject on his excellent blog. You can read it here: Wireless Internetting in Korea. |

Thanks for the info regarding wireless in korea, but what about setting up a router in your own home. I would like to have DSL or whatever they call a fast connection in my home for use wiht my laptop. Anyone have suggestions for a good deal or rate. |

Router?
Look if you have one computer and you want an internet connection, a router isn't required at all...
Has your laptop got a built in wireless receiver/antenna?
Most these days do and if you don't you can get a pcmcia or a USB one cheap (like under W40,000 I'm sure).
Then just see if there are any unencrypted wireless networks in your area to mooch off of.
If by chance all of your neighbours have remembered to encrypt their wirelss routers, then hook up with a DSL or cable ISP.
But YOU don't need a wireless router.
Given the size of Korean apts your better off just buying an extension cord (probably just a LAN cable from the external modem to your laptop). |
