Of the roughly 500 detainees held at the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, none is more notorious than Mohammad al-Qahtani, the so-called "20th hijacker." Only weeks before 9/11, he tried to enter the U.S. illegally in Orlando, Fla., while the plot's leader, Mohammad Atta, waited to pick him up in the airport parking lot. As the Pentagon has said, "Had al-Qahtani succeeded in entering the U.S., it is believed he would have been on United Airlines Flight 93, the only hijacked aircraft that had four hijackers instead of five [and the one that ended up crashing in a Pennsylvania field instead of striking the White House, its widely believed intended target]."
...
Now, in an eyewitness account of al-Qahtani at Guantanamo, his recently appointed American lawyer tells TIME that al-Qahtani has repudiated all of his previous statements claiming they were extracted under brutal torture.
...
That lawyer, Gitanjali S. Gutierrez, a CCR staff attorney, has already filed a challege in federal court, in the District of Columbia, to al-Qahtani's detention. She has also visited him twice at Guantanamo, first in December 2005 and again in January of this year. After spending more than 30 hours talking with him through an interpreter, she told TIME that al-Qahtani today appears to be a broken man, fearful and at times disoriented someone who has "painfully described how he could not endure the months of isolation, torture and abuse, during which he was nearly killed, before making false statements to please his interrogators." |

Well whatever torture he was subjected to kind of pales in comparison to the torment of those people who had to make the choice of either jumping to their death or getting burned alive in the Twin Towers. |

eh you're missing the point, which is: he might not be guilty nor have any ties to 9/11. |

Al Qaida teaches their members to always claim torture. |

Alternately, he might be guilty as sin but now the conditions under which he was held might give him more than a reasonable benefit of the doubt. |

Why does the American have to concern itself with the rights of suspected killers? I think the playing field should be level.
I'm sure a few families have been wiped out sitting in a cafe in Israel, Bali, Ny, Iraq, ect.... would wonder about their human rights. |

Is there? The US invited the UN to have a look didn't they?
Guantanamo prisoners gain weight. |

The inspectors said in the report that they had turned down the invitation because they would not have been able to meet privately with detainees. |

Of course he claims torture, it's the new thing to do among detainees.
"I'm being tortured, my human rights are being violated. ACLU! ACLU! They turned off the a/c in my cell. Rodney King! Rodney King!"
Please.

ok but what is their evidence?
they should have gone anyway.
the whole report anyway was done by the UN human rights commission that has Libya , China , the Sudan ,Cuba and Zimbabwae on it anyway. |

Is it not evident in my post that I've already made up my mind? |

This thread is dumb. How is it possible that all of you (or most) have already made up your mind? I bet that no one here can even remember both of their names (the guy and the leader) without checking again.
Maybe Joo. |

Here's the thing about the article:
The fact that there is a remote possablity it is true. Thanks to our actions in cuba and iraq, this man's claims aren't a total joke. prior to 9/11, he would have been laughed out of the room by everyone and there would be no doubt that he'd be full of BS.
And to elaborate on your original remark: Our own hatred makes us immune to the torture of others. Why should we lower ourselves to such barbarity? I think I'll pass.
Aren't you against the death penalty?? If you are not, forgive me. If you are, you define hypocriscy.
Not a fan of presumed innocence? Perhaps you should move to France, where the law system is "presumed guilty." |

Meh. This thread isn't as bad as your post. Honestly, because the Bush administration has extended its right to torture individuals whoever they are no matter what evidence they come by, BB's assertions stand true...

Notice that BB has made up his mind without knowing particular details. And he is dead right. |
