I swear I have a pop-up blocker up and running but I still get the odd pop-up that says something like "Brought to you by 180assistant".

usually the pop-ups are related to topics that I'm presently viewing on a webpage.

Any suggestions as to how a computer-dummy like me can fix this?

I use Firefox and lately some popups are getting through. Still, nothing compared to the Internet Evil browser. Some idiot started up IE at work the other day and it was like Whack-a-mole with the damn pop-ups.

Some web pages have been using a command in Flash to generate a pop up ad (traditionally it was done using javascript).

Korean games, among other things, are full of things that will hijack your browser and cause adware popus. They also do weird things like create new IE icons on your desktop or tool bar that actually go to other pages (find the original in this situation, and delete the bad ones).

The best thing to get rid of the browser hijacking issues and adware is free trial program called BHR Browser Hijack Restore. I found it at www.downloads.com

Just go to that site and download it, then follow the wizard as it runs through the first time. Checkmark everything that doesn't look like it's a part of windows, or something you want to keep.

Also download Adaware SE from that site, and run it. Also a free program that updates itself too.

For a browser independent popup solution simply cut and paste the following three lines to your hosts file (not lmhosts) which is located (for xp) in C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc and can be edited/opened with notepad.

127.0.0.1 firstadsolution.com
127.0.0.1 flirtomatic.com
127.0.0.1 ad.firstadsolution.com

Cuts out all ads for me regardless of browser.
