Spam, of course, is the ultimate example of how American army good has influenced Korean cuisine. Bu de jji ge, which is made from spam and hot dogs, is another example.
Some of the other peculiarities of Korean food I blame on the US army:
- Instant coffee (an abomination in the words of the immortal Ignatius J. Reilly)
- Processed cheese slices
- Sweet pickles (are sweet pickles a preference in the American south? In Canada and I would guess the American north dill pickles are preferred. I get the feeling a lot of American army food is guided by the tastes of the southerners who tend to enlist more than northerners)
I guess we can be happy powdered milk, coffee whitener, and instant mashed potato flakes have never made it into the Korean diet. |

If American tastes have had any impact at all on Korean cuisine, where the heck is the Miracle Whip? That's what I want to know. |

Hey haven't you noticed they put mayo on sushi here?
Oh, now that I think of it, honey mustard might be another one. There are 6 different varieties of honey mustard on a Korean grocery store shelf and you're sometimes lucky to find plain yellow mustard. |

Ummmm...What? Are you a barbarian or something? There is mayo and there is Miracle Whip. One is for gastronomes (Is that a word?) and all the others are for those who don't know the difference.
PS: How can you make a tuna salad sandwich without sweet pickle relish and Miracle Whip? I mean, how can you? |
