One of the kids (grade 3) came in today during recess and pointed to a tiger and said "liger". I then corrected him and he pointed to a lion and said "liger". I proceeded to correct him again and he said, "No, with a mommy lion and a daddy tiger, a liger." He then ran away
Not much of a reason to post this, but I thought it was really cute and reminds me why I love my job (beyond all the benefits ofcourse). |

FYI, The "liger" is a real animal. It was featured in the National Geographic Kids magizine in September 2005. We get it at my hogwan. I was surprised about ligers when I read about them. The kids showed me, because they grab the magazine right away when it comes. They asked me about it first and I didn't know. They were happy to teach me some English. |

I remember when the first Liger was born in Korea...did a quick search and found this:
CNN Evening News for Wednesday, Jul 16, 1997
Headline: South Korea / Liger Cub
Abstract: (Studio: Bernard Shaw) South Korea's new liger cub, a cross between a tiger and a lion, shown.
Begin Time: 05:52:40 pm
End Time: 05:53:10 pm
TVN Record Number: 417814
Copyright: Abstract and Metadata (c) 1997 Vanderbilt University
You can see a liger at Everland. |

Yeah, it's pretty much my favorite animal. It's like a lion and a tiger mixed... bred for its skills in magic. |

FYI a liger is not a 'real' animal. They are born sterile. |

I would say that they are not a true species, I wouldn't say that they are not real animals.
animal is defined as a living thing capable of locomotion.
You can cross two closely related species and get sterile offspring.
For example, horse + donkey = mule.
Animals have to be fertile to qualify as a species.
I remember one time two mules mated and produced offspring, but that was a rarity. That's why it made the news. |
