After going through the "Discrimination against Korea-Americans (Gyopos)" in the Job-Discussion forum, I was just wondering...

I got British citizenship 2 years ago through my Welsh mother who immigrated to Canada when she was four years old. Would I see any form of prejudice or bad feelings against me if I went and lived and worked in the UK? Just wondering.

I shouldn't think so, why would they discriminate you?

I am Chinese-British and I am/was not discriminated, I don't think you have a problem.

They might make fun of your accent, but that's about it.

I've experienced no discrimination in England - unless I'm wearing the wrong football colours.

Probably no discrimination because you're Canadian. but don't expect a big warm welcome hug either.

Well, there's an irony: Welsh poking fun at an accent?

Seriosuly, for the OP. You will have no problem. Most Brits are, contrary to their image, warm, friendly and welcoming to "outsiders", especially colonial cousins.

For example, when entering the first-class railway compartment, one should be sure to greet all your fellow travellers with a hearty handshake (an air kiss for any ladies present). Also, when staying at an hotel, please help the chambermaid by hanging your mattress over the window ledge to air it every morning.

Such small considerations for others will gain you instant respect in British society.

Oh, and houses of ill repute have not a red light but a BLUE light outside.

I hold dual Australian/UK citizenship. I lived there too for a few years. You'll have no worries.

You certainly wouldn't be discriminated against if looking for a job. Generally, British people are very welcoming to foriegners as we are a mixed bunch anyway. There are a lot of foriegners in London, often it seems more so than English people. I stood in a train station queue once and could only hear foriegn languages and non British accents speaking English. The only reason you might be discriminated against is if you are a tosser or if you get on the wrong side of a chav, but you don't need to be a forienger for that to happen! Laughing

"get on the wrong side of a chav"

There's no right side to be.

Ignore chavs and they'll go away.

Oh, I don't know I was rather touched when one told me at the end of my street 'you're right pretty, you are' in strong Leeds chav accent. It's better than a brick through the window, which incidentally has happened twice because they thought my boyfriend, sister, mate and I are students Rolling Eyes Litlle f*ckers.

Well, if matress is not the bit you lie on, then yes it's different.

That's the bit you should hang over the window sill every morning.

My 3 visits to the UK left me with nothing but the highest respect and praise for the culture, the society, and most of all, the wonderfully warm way in which Brits treated canines that wanted flying lessons... Very Happy

The world really needs to know how good PG TIPS tea is btw.
