I've seen that before. Hogwans are about entertainment so maybe it makes sense.

most likely she's married to a korean - they can legally work at hogwans without the typical foreigner requirements.

What do you mean by pretend to be a Canadian? You mean to the students? I had a Korean-American co-worker once who was told by management to tell students that he was in no way Korean...that was strange. Never worked with a Russian pretending to be a Canadian though. Never worked with a Russian-Canadian either. However, I've had a few students from Japan who were teaching Japanese here as well as one Korean student who taught French in some hakwon.

she tried to pretend to the coworkers, by saying that she was canadian. of course we could tell immediately by the accent. we already have a korean teacher pretending to be american - from orange county. ha

It could be someone I know. She's Canadian by citizenship but Russian by birth. No problems with any aspect of English but does have a noticeable Russian accent. Who cares? A clear Russian accent is better than a Glaswegian one.

Is she classified as being a native-speaker and does she get paid the same as the native speakers?

Worked with a Hungarian who'd moved to Australia at the age of 20 for a while, he was a fabulous teacher.

Maybe give her the benefit of the doubt until you know her. She is a Canadian if she has a Canadian passport...it doesn't matter what she speaks like. I had a few friends in Canada who had noticeable accents...didn't mean they didn't speak English or weren't Canadian.

Are you a racist? if she has a Canadian passport then she is INDEED a Canadian. Or, are you one of those pathetic rednecks that thinks only those born in Canada can be Canadian?

It could be a strange requirement of your boss, to try and keep the parents happy. I've met people from South Africa and the Philipines who were instructed to tell their students and Korean co-teachers that they were Australian, because it was considered 'bad' to have a teacher from such 'bad' countries as SA and the Philipines, and parents might withdraw their children from the hagwan if they found out about it.

Evidently their bosses had never met many Australians Wink

I think the point is that she's being passed off as a Canadian native speaker when she's not.

Hmmmm.. Canadian native speaker? What does that mean, exactly. HOW is her English? Does she make mistakes when she speaks? Is her spelling a disaster? Or is the issue merely an accent? Are we now going to assume that just being native makes one a fantastic speaker of the language? Well, lots of native speakers in Korea speak terrible English. Perhaps the girl moved to Canada at a young age, retained a bit of an accent but managed to get to native-like, or almost native-like proficiency. In that case, whats the problem, exactly?

If she moved to Canada before the age of about 15 she would be fine as a native speaker. If she moved to Canada after 18 she would at best have a strong accent. Presumably she also has a degree from a Canadian university so her English skills must be reasonably good, though I've met immigrants who were successful science majors with very poor English.

The point is that the parents are unlikely to know what her potential language deficiencies are. This doesn't just go for Russians; the same would hold true for a Quebecois or Afrikaner. Korea has few checks for 'native speakers' besides having a passport and degree from one of seven countries.

In my experience, Russians speak and write English very well.
