Has anybody out there seen it? I assume it is intelligently done, isn't it? Does it have anything to say? Worth the time & money?

It basically just tells a story and doesn't offer a huge amount of insight, or have anything new to say. I would've expected as much from an after-school special.

On the other hand, it's the iconic movie of the year, and if you don't see it you're going to be left in the dust.

Haven't seen it yet, but I did watch "New World" last night, and it was boring boring boring. Lots of close ups of water, leaves and trees, with interpretive dance in place of dialog. Although a couple sitting on a couch in the back of the theater found it inspiring enough to have sex during the show. We threw ice at them but they still didn't cool down.
Sorry if I'm not any help...

I have seen "Brokeback" and have some thoughts on it, I won't give away any details. It is quite good. The cinematography is amazing, it feels like you are in Alberta/Wyoming/Montana. The theatre literally becomes Big Sky Country. The acting is ok, I don't believe that they deserved the acting nods. I do think it should have won best cinematography. The story can be viewed in 2 ways. For those of us who are gay or part of the gay community in some way, the story reaffirms that we are capable of love in the same way that heterosexuals experience love. For heterosexuals the story seems to point out that there are many lifestyles and this one is hardly the bastion of evil that Bushites would have you believe. I think in the end everyone should see it to try and understand another section of our population like we would see "Boyz in the Hood", I may not be black but I get the signifigance of that film. Also, despite "Crash"'s win, Brokeback will remain the iconic event and like previous films of this iconic nature "Deep Throat", "Midnight Cowboy", "The Wild Bunch", etc it deserves to been seen.

What do you mean? They actually "did it"? I've heard of this kind of thing happening in Asian theatres, but have never witnessed it firsthand. I'd probably be distracted too from this movie. Maybe you should have "accidentally" tripped and spilled your large Coke on them. It would have been worth the lost soda.

I saw it and was moved by it, making it worth seeing to me.

It's a very sad love story and the characters just happen to be gay (I think that's the point. they could just have easily come from different races, social backgrounds, what have you).

The movie looked good, the actors were genuine, and the dialogue was well written. If you're into heartbreaking movies about relationships and loss then you won't be disappointed.

It's a great movie and would've been my pick for best film (out of those I saw anyway). I didn't feel that it styled itself as a message movie at all. It was at bottom just a good yarn very well told.

its a good movie! and worth watching! low budget inde style with great cinematography. its not an amazing movie!
it tells a story of living a life as you a suppose as society makes it that way but deep down would rather live the way they want to! and that is not just about gay love! its about many kinds of love! or being with the person you really want to be with.. arrange marrages are still happening today! for an example..
its a good story..give it a watch and you be the judge!
its more than just a GAY COWBOY movie!
I rememeber seeing heath ledger on leno last year he was just there to talk about what he has been up.. he was there to promote any movie!
he mentioned he had just finished making 5 movies back to back!
and he said! he did the brothers grimm, then straight after that was
california -lords of dog town! then I flew to calgary and made a cowboy who is gay! and then flew to venice to shoot casanova! and then back to Australia where he made candy about a herion junkie and his girlfriend!
of course leno picked up on GAY COWBOY!!?
he was like yeah a low budget GAY COWBOY movie made by ang lee
he didnt really seem that interested talking about it..

I think he still cant believe the responses they are getting for this movie!

anyway give it watch..
great landscape!

I can't look at a cowboy these days without going "pffff gay!"

I have nothing against gay cowboys but I don't want to see it. Gay or straight cowboy movies just don't interest me.

I was hoping to see the movie for some of the reasons others have cited above, but now I'm rethinking the plan:

That Capote was as gay as a tree full of monkeys on nitrous oxides? A movie about gays, gay cowboys no less, a subject that nobody really gives a good hump about and, Perhaps the truth really is, that the vast majority of Americans dont care much for paying money to watch males pumping their manmeat up each others Khyber Passes, no matter what profession they have? Very Happy

Sorry about the confusion, the theater was in Alaska. I leave for Korea this Friday.

I just looked at the trailer. The movie looks like a good drama. If you like movies, have a look at this site for movie trailers.

Ang Lee makes beautiful movies, always has. The scenery looks good, the actors do too. The both the plot and the acting are good, but lets face it- it got all the oscar hype cause it's the year to embrace gay men in Hollywood

I do wonder how well it will hold up over time as gay romances become more and more common.
