Imagine you are considering a masters relevant to your occupation (as an ESL/EFL teacher). An MA in TESOL and an MA in Applied Linguistics have considerable overlap and were quite similar give or take a few subjects.
Which one would you choose. And WHY? |

Don't forget......
Master of Education
At my university we had a choice:
1. Master of Education
2. Master of Applied Linguistics
3. Master of TESOL
I took Master of Applied Linguistics and a girl I know took the M.Ed. degree. We both took the same courses.
All degrees involved the same courses and all were delivered through the Faculty of Education. |

| The difference between the two degrees at my university was just one course. |

That makes sense.
The TESOL MA programs I have looked into (not lots, maybe five) were offered through linguistics departments. So the degree would be a linguistics (or Applied Linguistics MA) with a TESOL emphasis. I would have expected that for a diploma to actually read "MA in TESOL" it would have to be offered by a specifically-focused "College of TESOL" or "TESOL Department,"...?
which sounds like kind of diploma mill or trade school thing... |

The OPs question is of great interest to me. I sometimes wonder if I've made the wrong choice.
I'm studying for an MA is TESOL at the University of Queensland - one of the 'sandstone universities' of Australia (sandstone = prestigious/long established in this context).
Our course convenor is from the linguistics department, but it is offered by 3 deptments working together: education, applied linguistics and linguistics. We do almost all the same subjects as the applied linguistic students. Only 2 core subjects (offered by the education department) are different. Otherwise, our subjects are mostly those done with students doing the applied linguistics MA.
I'm curious, and this question is aimed at you and anyone else, will the fact my MA is from a prestigious university make it sound OK. Or would it still sound like a 'mill degree' in your opinion.
I really do wonder sometimes if I should change to an MA in applied linguistics. This would be easy to do, as I've practically got all the requirements to do that (having mostly studied subjects offered by the applied linguistics dept).
In my opinion, both degrees are equally sound. In theory the MA in TESOL is more suitable, as I am an ESL teacher. But theory and practice do not always concur. I'm just concerned about prejudices and perceptions, and how they might devalue all my hard work in that respect. So your honest opinion is very important to me. |

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at there mate.
Yes, I want honest opinions. Once I've graduated, I'm stuck with whichever MA title I've chosen - so I'd prefer to make an assessment now, rather than look back in hindsight. |
