Hey, so I've started my job and I am really enjoying it. I was wondering though, how many of you actually have much control over kindergarten classes?
I Have four 30minute kindy classes each morning and it feels like going to war, and most of the time losing! Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy it, and have no problems singing songs, running around like an idiot, doing elephant impressions etc, but sometimes still come away from it wishing they would listen just a little bit more. And, of course, when all hell is breaking loose, a Korean teacher can just walk in, and with a few words get complete silence and calm!
This is my first teaching job, but I have no problems with confidence or being able to 'let go'. But, my voice, even when loud, usually falls on deaf ears (well, half the class maybe), and things descend into madness!
Could this be because I'm a new teacher, and things get progressively better? If not, it's still enjoyable, so I guess you just have to accept that's the way it will be? Of course, it helps that they are so damn cute, so you can never get THAT pissed off! In comparison, the elementary kids are superb, and the afternoons just speed by! |

Just some basics:
1) Create a routine
2) Make sure it involves physical activity.
This can be really simple, like when they first come in, they sit in a circle on the floor for a song, then sit at a desk for a worksheet or art activity, then stand up for some TPR, then sit down for a listening/coloring activity, then stand in a circle for a song with motions. Make it so they know what they are supposed to do, and don't try to make them sit still for longer than they are able to!
(I'm not saying my kindergarten kids are perfect, but when they're not doing the right thing, they can tell me what they're SUPPOSED to be doing!) |

Train them to stand/sit at attention like soldiers when you do a "3-2-1" countdown. Work out a simple - preferably lighthearted - punishment and reward system for those who don't follow. I find it also works well when the kids are in teams, so that if one kid isn't standing at attention, the whole team gets noogies (or some such thing). They should understand that they are not to even twitch until you give the 'all-clear' signal.
This system used to work without fail for me when I was teaching. |

I agree if you do your routine every day the kids will catch on. Quite simply just enforce the rules and they will catch on very quickly. Rewards for listening etc. If you see one student sitting nicely ready to listen point her out to others and give her a star or something on the board. |

Yes or no!!
Yes if..... in time the kids really, really like you and don't want to upset you so you can get attention by pulling the 'i'm dissappointed in you' look.
No if....... they're just a freakish bunch of rebels (it happens).
Also (with certain classes), I tended to come down on them like a tonne of bricks at first and slowly ease into niceness. A bit harsh, but after a month or so they forgot how you used to be an ogre, but the disipline has been established and they know your boundries - no need to test them. |
