Hello. I just signed a contract to teach at a new school at the end of March. I was too busy to go back to the school to meet the owner on Friday night or Saturday morning and now they told me they are not sure if they want to hire me anymore. They checked references with my curent school but they told me one of my former schools is closed down now and the management changed at my other school, so they have no way to get a reference from those 2 places. I am so sad now. They told me I was hired and now just because I was too busy to meet the owner last week they may not hire me after all. Crying or Very sad

You failed to make a good-faith effort in establishing a positive relationship with a new boss and now you are surprised he is having second thoughts? Hmmm. Are you FOB?

Do you guys really think they have second thoughts because of that?

They found another teacher that they think is better (better looking/cheaper).

Why not reschedule another meeting with your boss to show your good faith? Take them out for dinner if necessary. If your boss refuses then obviously he has no faith in working with you and it is probably best you didn't get that job.

Sounds like they're just being hard-assed.

You gotta think though. It's not as if they have all the time in the world to find a teacher. March 1st is Wednesday.

Well.., obviously they haven't found someone better. They put a new job ad on a website Sunday and hey I look pretty darn good. I am petite and cute!!! Maybe they could get someone cheaper...I don't know...

You mentioned in another thread that you weren't sure if you should trust him.

Maybe he got that vibe from you and wasn't sure if you really wanted the position, so he decided to move on.

Just a thought?

Count your lucky stars. If they are pulling crap like this before you are even hired, think about the crap they will pull once you are hired!

I would count it as a bullet dodged, move on and find another job.

And when the director emailed me last week he said something about me meeting the owner on Friday, Saturday or any day I can. Then last night on the phone he said we are not sure if we want to hire you because you didn't meet the owner on Friday or Saturday and he wanted to see you and your old school is closed down now and the manager changed at your other school. WEll, those things are BEYOND my control. Is it my fault my first school is closed down now or that the manager changed at my second school? Geez!!! And I already signed the contract about 2 weeks ago, so why was it so important I travel 2 hours away again just to meet the owner?

I think they read your refusal to travel 2 hours as, "princess is not a team player in the time-honored Korean tradition". Maybe I'm wrong.

Pest1 and Grotto have the best points so far in this thread. You should make a gesture to repair the good faith and if they can't rise to the occasion consider it a litmus test and move on with gratitude for having learned before having started. Why try to reinstill good faith?

You know, I really hate trolls who pounce on people with problems on this board, but I think somebody needs to say - albeit as supportively as possible - that it was really a bad move to find yourself too busy to greet your boss, especially if they did you any favours before greeting day. What were you thinking? I hope you at least called and didn't stand him/her up. Has anyone else ever had the opportunity to listen to the thoughts of hagwon directors when they no longer need to worry about your reaction? I maintain friendships with some I no longer work with, and this is what goes on in their heads : "What the f**k did they have to do that was so pressing they couldn't stop over and say hello?" I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying that's the reality. This is magnified if any favors have been done before greeting day, e.g. plane flight, apartment set-up, etc. It's possible they don't care and are having second thoughts for some other reason but my money is on they're dreading the possibility of having hired royalty.

Well in case it doesn't work out, consider it a lesson for next time. You're still in a huge market, it's no big deal, don't be sad. Just remember the importance of first impressions in this market where so much miscommunication can easily occur.

Well, today I talked with my current manager about the way this new school is acting towards me and she said if I signed a contract 2weeks ago that should count for something. Me, too. I don't understand why if I already signed the contract I would need to go 2 hours away again a week later just to meet the owner, especially since they know I leave soon and have to pack and do things before I leave. She said if they are like this now, what would they try to pull later on if I did start working there. I am so sad because I don't want to be away from my boyfriend longer than a month. Crying or Very sad
