Almost all vitamin C drinks sold in South Korea have been found to contain benzene, a hazardous chemical substance, the country's food watchdog said Thursday.

That is damn annoying. We have a few boxes of it in the company fridge. Thinking of spiking it with soju. That stuff'll kill/cure anything, I hear. It'll make short work of that nasty benzene. And it's a proven productivity enhancer, too. |

In its secondary screening, the Korea Food and Drug Administration (KFDA) has detected the carcinogen, with the amount ranging from 5.7 to 87.7 ppb (parts per billion) in 27 out of 30 vitamin C drinks in the country, including those produced overseas, it said. |
The WHO says 10 ppb is acceptable for human consumption. So some of the drinks are below the guide line, some are above. The news report doesn't really provide any helpful information which brands have too much benzene. In fact, it doesn't even tell you what the acceptable level is for human consumption. I mean there's a lot of toxins in everything we eat and drink. There's cocaine on our money. Etc. It's a bit like the Chinese kimchi parasite scare. Great. There are parasites in all our vegetables. Governments set limits. Saying there are parasites in Chinese kimchi didn't really tell you anything if it didn't tell you there were more parasites than guidelines.
Even in North America we're drinking way more benzene in our drinks than we should:

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) uncovered data in a June 2003 FDA report called the "Total Diet Study," showing that nearly 80 percent of diet soda samples tested from 1995 to 2001 contained benzene at levels well above the federal standard of 5 parts per billion (ppb) for tap water. Among 24 diet cola samples, 19 had levels that were on average four times higher than the tap water limit, with one non-diet cola drink testing at 138 ppb, or 27 times the limit. |
