| Not quite a solo, but the duet (or threesome) in Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" always impresses me. |

Well I'm not sure about the wall-to-wall Hendrix shutout, but he definitely has to figure in there somewhere. |

I need your love so bad......Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green.
When you're young............The Jam (Paul Weller).
Voodoo Chile................Jimi Hendrix.
Little Wing.................Stevie Ray Vaughan.
That's all I can think of right now. I like the minimal guitar style. The shredders do nothing for me. |

I haven't paid that much attention to rock music for many moons now. (...I can only vaguely recall that I used to be really into it - leaning up against the stage at the original Woodstock and all...) Anyway, after briefly consulting a list of great guitar solos posted on the Internet to refresh my memory, I'll tentatively list these as my top ten (though my list of personal favorites would be different...)
1) "All Along the Watchtower" - Jimmy Hendrix
2) "Stairway to Heaven" - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
3) "Freebird" - Allen Collins (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
4) "Hotel California" - Don Feder/Joe Walsh (Eagles)
5) "Layla" - Eric Clapton (Derek and the Dominos)
6) "Sweet Child of Mine" - Slash (Guns and Roses)
7) "Sultans of Swing" - Mark Knopfler (Dire Straights)
"Dream" - John McLaughlin (Mahavishnu Orchestra)
9) "Sex" - Larry Coryell
10) "Albert's Shuffle" - Mike Bloomfield (SuperSession...)
I think honorable mention should be made of the following great guitarists that I don't think have been listed yet:
Carlos Santana, Dave Davies (Kinks) Duane Allman, Eddie Van Halen, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck, George Harrison, Jerry Garcia, Pete Townsend, Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple) Johnny Winter, Neil Young, and Alvin Lee... The link for "100 Greatest Rock Solos" is http://www.digitaldreamdoor.com/pages/best_guitarsolo.html
To stimulate discussion, I'll go ahead and post their top 40:
1. Comfortably Numb - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)

3. All Along The Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
4. Freebird - Allen Collins (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
5. Maggot Brain - Edie Hazel (Funkadelic)
6. Texas Flood - Stevie Ray Vaughan
7. Eruption - Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
