| Berlitz looks to be a sweet deal if they walk like they talk. How reliable are they. Do they work you like a dog? Is there another big firm that would be better to sign with? |

Oh god. Really do a search on Berlitz Korea. It's so bad the teachers had to form a union. Think about this: teachers who are only here for a single year found it so bad they're happy to pay union dues to get a better shake. Berlitz Korea is famous for lies, low pay, long hours, not paying the end of year bonus... Maybe they've changed but they don't give you free housing like every other hagwon.
Yeah, just because it's a big international name doesn't mean they're a good outfit.

Seriously, they are tough to work for.
Why don't you e-mail a few of the people at the Berlitz Union - I'm sure they could tell you all about how you can expect to be treated at Berlitz.
Proceed with caution is my best advice to you on getting involved with BERLITZ. LOL!!

OK. Thanks for the heads up. The recomendation came from a teacher in Japan that knows their reputation "in big name only."
How in the world does a teacher secure a job over there without being taken for a boob. I really wanted to get a taste of Korea, but here are so many negative aspects that I keep hearing about. What is the insentive to teach there. Why are ya'll there and not in say....Japan or Taiwan? |

Well, we arent in Japan or Taiwan because Korea isnt as bad as it seems. The reality is that the angry, dissatisfied minority screams loudest and thats all you hear. Its possible, believe it or not, to secure a good job and live a good life in Korea. Do your homework first. |

Berlizt e-mailed me their company info the other day (they saw my resume) and the hourly wage was just ridiculous.
I wronte them back and told them we wouldn't be able to do business together.
They replied with a thank you and we'll keep you on our list  |

Everybody says "Do your Homework", but what exactly does that mean. I have spent too many hours to count researching the prospect and all I get is either bad leads or bad advice. It seems that all of the ads for Korea are bogus, or at least a precursor to a "bait and switch." For those of you that are happy.......how did you find yourself in your current position? |

I wish everyone would turn down Berlitz with something similar. "Sorry, but my research reveals your school has a terrible reputation and the prevailing wage/benefits in Korea makes your offer seem derisory." |

This is doing your homework. You asked about Berlitz, now you know they are not a place to woek.
To really get a good situation going usually takes time in the country. You should do as much homework as you can but eventually take the plunge. Dont even bother looking for a perfect job, usually newbies arent hired for those. Pay your dues and you might get into a good position. |

Right. This goes to my latest post in this thread. It takes time to find a good job. Its like paying your dues, taking your knocks, graduating from the school of hard knocks. Im at my 4th place now. But I didnt dislike any of the 3 hagwons I worked for. Its just that they were hagwons with the regular 30 hours teaching 2.0 million a month, 10 days vacation jobs. Not bad but not great. |

Does this mean that you stayed with the same hagwons for the duration of your contract, or did you hop around until you were content? |

Hop around? Try hopping around and see how happy immigration is. I always stayed for the duration. Its also called "not burning bridges" or building up solid references, without which you will never get a good job. |
