this poll is interesting so far. I know a lot of people make general stereotypes regarding the people in Korea. I figure this would show a small, relative guestimate as to what the diversity in Korea is. Then maybe people wouldn't be so quick to jump the gun and accuse, criticize, or ridicule a particular nation, seeing we are all in it together.. |

I have been wondering - why are there so many Canadians? Based on this small pool, let's say that in Korea the number of Canadian English teachers is roughly equivalent to the number of American English teachers. But the U.S. has 10 times the population. So there are 10 times more Canadians per capita teaching English in Korea. Why is that? Is there more campaigning or awareness at the universities? Less job opportunities after college? I am honestly interested to know. |

Indeed. No Ireland.
The other 10 times we have done this poll I think the pollster managed to include the 7 English-speaking countries of the world. This one almost managed it. Not quite though.
But hey! He put the Philippines in there!!...... |

Well, in my experience, they were advertising for jobs in Korea everywhere at my university. We even used to have a tv show that was called English Teachers on one network. They were all in Taiwan and it was back in the mid-90's.
Another thing is that you will find a disproportionate number of Canadians come from the Maritimes. It just happens that the part of the country with the nicest people also has the least amount of jobs. A lot of people move out, and why not come to Korea?
Another theory I have, which has no real merit but my own, has to do with education. Canada has a shorter history and not necessarily an exciting history; therefore, we don't have as much to study during school. What do we get taught instead? You guessed it! We study other countries. (In grade 9 or 10, we were all expected to be able to label at least 100 countries on the world map, at least at my high school) So, I think there is more of an awareness of the world at large, and that sparks an interest in going abroad. However, this could be completely wrong, but I don't see anything that shows it isn't true either. (This also does not dispute that there is a large number of ignorant Canadians out there.) |
