Last night my copy of Norton expired and I decided to move away from it for a number of reasons. Anyhow I installed Avast and my computer has completely slowed down. I can no longer do more than open one browser at a time. Any thing more than that and the computer completely freezes

I went to the AVG site and it looks like they no longer have a free version available. Any suggestions? I really want to get rid of avast ASAP.

Thanks.

strange i found my computer ran faster on avast than norton.
Here is a suggestion. though you don't like norton. download google pack. it comes with a six month subsricption to notron. or if you have no antivirus on your computer and click on the bubble warning you about that you will see a page that has some reccomended antivirus programs. most of them have 3 month subscriptions. As long as you don't mind switching anitvirus programs every few months this could be an alternative to actually paying for anything.

Hi superhero,

I have w2k on my laptop and it runs reasonably fine - here's what I do in case you're interested.

* run avg and schedule it's maintenance for sometime when I know that I won't be using my computer ... night-time, lunch time etc ... the download and file checking usually doesn't take that long so it's done when I go back to work on it. If you're using it at the time just pause the avg program and then run it again when you're finished. If you want to check download files then just right click on them and run the file checker. I don't think you need a 24hr virus checker hogging your cpu cycles (... or at least I don't).
* install the kerio personal firewall and let it run as 'custom' it'll then ask you every time an application installs or a port gets open. It'll remember your rules for later on - so that you won't have it asking the same thing twice.
* uninstall IE if you can and install the latest version of firefox (if you have to use IE, then make sure to keep it updated). You might think about raising it's security level as well (but I don't bother).
* run spybot every week or so

Spybot rarely if ever throws up any virii on my computer. My girlfriend runs IE on the computer and she doesn't want to use firefox so I'm at a disadvantage there.

I also run a netgear router firewall at the perimeter. That's handy for just locking down any unwanted ports. But a well configured software firewall will do just as well for most uses.

Really, really odd. Did you uninstall Norton ENTIRELY?

Have installed AVAST on over 30 computers, and had no problems due to Avast.

I found that AVG sucked, in comparison. It's resident checker really stinks, and it doesn't have the scanning/update functionality that AVAST does.

It's likely that you had a bad install, or something else on your computer is conflicting. Are you running ZoneAlarm? AVAST conflicts with that, but it tells you during the install, and gives you the option of disabling the part that does so you can run ZoneAlarm if you want.

Based on your previous posts, however, I'd venture to say you probably just screwed things up.

I got AVG running and have had no problems since then. Yes I had completely removed Norton using a removal tool not the uninstall feature in control panel. Don't use zonealarm so no conflicts there.

Anyhow, I'm happy enough with AVG for now.

Fully agree. Avast has picked up stuff that AVG didn't on more than one occasion now.

... well I really think that it's not exactly as simple as that. Most AV's today are just string-checkers. It's not as simple as the 'it does exactly what it says on the tin' scenario.

If M$ brought out a virus checker tomorrow that red-flagged newlines ... by your logic, it'd be the best AV out there.

If you are going to rate AV's by how many red-flags they throw up ... (and alot of people do ) ... then you're going to get the AV you deserve.

If you are running windows/IE then you are just as likely to lose data to unstable programs and insecure services as you are to virii.

This whole red-flag stuff is just AV company propaganda IMO ...

I've been using free AVG for over a year and a few months ago installed 64 bit Avast on my friend's pc. neither of us have had any virus problems.
Neither of us have had any false positives either, which I used to get from time to time with Norton.
