Dunno whether this has been raised before or if I'm doing something wrong, but the search function on this site sure does suck.
Try it yourself - think of a thread from, say, a month or two ago and do a search for it.
Alternatively, think of a theme - rice, chocolate, Mexican food, Daegu, domestic violence, Korean classes, clubs/bars, anything - and do a search on it.
I know of another msg board that uses this server and searches on that are always perfect. This one throws any old random crap at you with the things you're looking for on page 4 (if at all).
Unless it's just me (in which case I apologize), people who bark "use the search function" or "couldn't you have done a search on this?" at newbies should think on I feel. When was the last time you searched for something and how fruitful was it? |

It used to work fine.
But I agree that it doesn't work very well now.
I don't know what happened. |

I agree. It's never worked since I've read the K-boards and that's like a year now. Maybe the reason there are bandwidth isssues is that newbies have to ask questions, start thread after thread on transcripts, visas, contracts because the search function is defective? |

The problem isn't with this site specifically. It's just that phpbb just has really, really smacky search code.
Go to google and put this in along with whatever you're searching for:
site:http://www.eslcafe.com/forums/korea/
That will make google limit your results to only things from the address that you list. It's not perfrect, but its far better than the native phpbb search imo. |

I think that the best way is to just post a question or start up a topic. If it's been done to death already, someone is sure to chime in and give you a list of appropriate threads. Everyone knows that the search thing is crap. If people know offhand the perfect thread for you, they are likely to just post the link for you. |

Don't forget to check the FAQ pages first, if you are new here and have some questions ... it'll avoid ticking off the old-timers who have already answered the same questions 57 times.

A bigger problem seems that all the stickies and FAQ's are WAY outdated. Many of the FAQ's are from 2003, and most addresses and info on banking, shopping, cell phones and computers are simply no longer true.
South Korea is fast evolving, and there are very few relevant FAQ stickies regarding banking, credit cards, cell phones, laptops, internet service, restaurants, etc. that are applicable in 2006. Heck, I've been here for a year, and the cell phone information alone has changed drastically in the last 6 months alone.
It's like there was ALOT of effort put into this site about 3 years ago, but has been left fallow since then--hence the 100000000 threads regarding topics like credit cards, phones, banking, etc. When someone looks through the stickies, sees year 2003 thread stickies...well, of course the site will get cluttered with even more 3-post threads about X topic. |

Am I the only one who thinks this attitude is peculiar? I for one have learned to skip answering posts I don't want to to answer. Heck's bells, there are even posts I don't read if I know by the title I'm not interested.
I cringe when someone says, Ahhh...go do a Search. We've already covered that one. I always feel like asking what barn they grew up in. |
