While sitting through about 8 critical errors in a row, I got to thinking: Maybe the problem stems from the fact that this site (the discussion forum) generates no income for the master and it would be better for him if it died from lack of interest.

I can imagine something like this happening: semi-fluent but bitter hakwon owner reads the site. Writes an e-mail to the master saying, "Pretty darn anti-Korean site you have goin' there. I think I'll post my job wanted ads on a site that doesn't support that crap. Thank you very much."

And master sits back and says, "Hmmm. Money or free speech? I think I can guess which side my bread is buttered on. Let's let the site become so technically annoying that people give up and go elsewhere."

error

Sperling needs the message boards to keep the volume of ESL teachers and wannabes clicking in. The boards are indirectly the backbone of the income generated by job ads.

Also, if the administration really wanted to kill the board why wouldn't they just delete it rather than concoct some elaborate phpbb error scheme? The former would be a lot easier not to mention humane.

Yeah, and what's up with the times shown on posts? This site is definitely not on Korean time. Or is it? Hmm.

Are you saying that people only check out job ads on sites where they can also post rants, raves and idle nonsense? I don't know about other people, but when I'm job hunting, I go where the ads are. Any frills or extra benefits to the site are just that. Frills.

Evil genius? It's more customer savy to drive people away through irritation rather than a direct insult: Get outta here. We don't want you any more.

This is not a strongly held theory of mine. It's the result of having too much time on my hands while waiting for the darn site to connect up to the data base again. To be honest, I think igotthisguitar is falling down on his job lately by failing to provide the proper conspiracy theory explanation for all of our questions about this problem on Dave's.

No, he is saying that the traffic the forums generate gives this whole portal the high rankings on the web and allows dave to stay #1 in the industry.

Which makes sense but is not true. The site gets very few hits from search engines - most people seem to have it bookmarked, or they type in the url, or they come from another site.

Dave couldn't care a lick about search engines and rankings, and I guess the advertisers don't either. But they know that the jobs ads will get applicants.

It might be hard for some posters to believe, but most visitors to the site don't even know the forums exist. Like Ya-ta says, they come for jobs.

I got a second email from Dave saying that he is still working on the problem (the computer guys that is....). Harder to fix than first thought, due to the problem being intermittent and not always due to just volume, time etc.......

But he is going to get it fixed. For what reasons???? All of those are speculations. Maybe he just wants something he created to work well.

My theory - the Korean forum has become a kind of cyberspacian Skinner box, and every time a pretentious self-styled intellectual superstar clicks the refresh button, some mad experimental psychologist laughs his arse off.
