Has anyone gotten a drivers license here? What are the procedures and tests like? Looks like I might need a car soon so any info is appreciated. Those motorcyle delivery drivers better watch out now!! |

Do you have a licence from your home country? If you do, then simply go to the drivers licence office (with your Korean friend to translate), take 10,000 won, your ARC, your passport, a couple passport type photos and your western drivers licence. They will give you a new shiney Korean licence in about an hour.
If you DON"T have a licence from home, then you will have to take a written and driving test. They do have the test in English. |

I'm not certain if it is still true or not, but at one time citizens from some countries had to take the test and citizens from other countries did not. I think it was related to whether or not the home country accepted Korean drivers licenses. Anyway, you might have your boss give the license place a call and make sure if you can just swap licenses or have to take a test. |

Yep, had to do 5 knee bends, I guess to see if I was in a real emergency where I had to use a squat toilet, I could handle it. Who knows? Also had to do an eye test and a written test. |

I'm American and I had to:
1) Pay a total of W14000
2) Take a brief eye exam
3) Take a test (in English, on a computer). I squeaked by with a 70
4) Provide THREE pictures (not TWO---IMPORTANT)
The whole deal took about an hour. |

For Americans this is the routine. However, it doesn't always happen in an hour. I had to go twice: once to fill out paperwork and a second time to take the &$%# test.
Not trying to be contrary, but be aware that it isn't always that quick. Oh, and the test isn't always on a computer. Mine was on paper. (100% )
If you're not American, check the link someone listed above to find out the requirements for your country.

Yes, but at least it wasn't babelfish konglish.
Although, see if you can guess the correct answer to THIS one:
In which case is it OK to stop and park your vehicle:
1) An Intersection
2) A tunnel
3) A railroad crossing
4) A crosswalk
The correct answer is NONE OF THE ABOVE!!! But naturally, that wasn't a choice.
Another one that stumped me:
A baby is how old, and a child is how old?
1) less than 5; less than 12
2) less than 6; less than 13
3) 5 or less; 12 or less
4) 6 or less; 13 or less
I s**t you not. That was a REAL, ACTUAL question. And you gotta wonder, is that Asian years, or Western years? |

It's a fun process. If you come from a country that has left hand drive the procedure is simple. For Aussies it's a tad more difficult. You need to get a copy of your licence certified and translated by the embassy. You have to find one of the test centres that offer the test in English and for some of them, only on particular days. The test is as previously described, quite ridiculous. Mind you I aced it. I live in Gwangyang and went to Masan for my test, they were going to refuse to allow me to do it until the senior copper there stepped in and told the civvie that I could do it there. It seems I was supposed to go to Najun to do my test. A headache to get, but its for ten years and looks pretty. |
