A couple of days ago, my gf was taking a shower when someone came to our door and started knocking and yelling something in Korean. She was in the shower so she couldnt come out right away to let him in. After a while (she said), the knocking became louder along with the yelling. Probably because she is only an affeminate little asian gal, she started to get really worried and panicked. Then the guy started to try to turn the doorknob. She started to cry. He was still yelling, trying to push the door open, and trying to turn the door knob (the dead bolt was latched, though) for several minutes (well thats what she said but she gets upset and over reacts easily, so...) before he gave up and left.

Later, when I got home, she told me the whole story. I was a bit shocked because even though I complain about things here alot, one thing I like is the fact that its safe and violence free. I almost didn't believe her or I figured maybe she was being an irrational woman (WOMEN! CANT LIVE WITH THEM, CANT LIVE WIDOUT EM)...

So I asked my boss about what possibly could have happened and he told me that someone had called him 2 days earlier to say that the water company needed to come by and check our pipes for leakage. He is so polite and considerate, he apologized profusely for not telling me before and explained that the guy was trying desperately to get in our place in order to fix the pipes in order to prevent our entire house from being flooded!

See, in America, it would never happen that way. Those utility workers don't care enough... In Korea, they are so dedicated that they are willing to break into your house to fix a problem... And those guys here in Korea don't get paid much either! I think this is one thing that makes being in Korea so great...

A strange man knocks your door through the wall, giving your beloved effeminate little asian girl nightmares.

And you're grateful?

Put those two quotes together and wager whether dude is a hillbilly or retarded.

Lamest. Post. Ever.

The doorknob shakes, prompting your "woman" to break down emotionally, which motivates you to contemplate the madness of it all, which leads to you actually typing up this situation and posting it on this board.

Oh my. Are you teaching children?

Now, now.. yes I realize this is not the sort of thing one should normally post about. But I was just trying to provide some good feeling to this board. It is so negative. Yes, I realize this may be in part at my gf's expense.. but I think I made her understand later that night Wink

Pest2, since when did you become an apologist? I am feeling really sorry for your little Asian girlfriend. Gees, thanks for being positive as if we don't have enough apologists on this board already.

did she "get it"?
wink, wink
Wow, what a guy.
She is really lucky to have you in her life.
Not too mention those masculine (but caring) little asian utility workers....

Well that's what is so great about this country!! The women are VERY feminine and submissive. They know thier place. It's so much better to date an asian chick because I never have to hear her complain about me hitting on other women, not spending enough time w/her (except when I'm letting her have 'special time' with me haha), leaving my smelly socks on the bed, not cleaning the kitchen.. man, my ex-gf was so annoying but not so here in Asia!
And I'm such a great positive guy now. You're totally right. She IS lucky... now if I could just make her understand that there is really not too much difference between her and those utility workers because they're just about as affeminate as anyone else in Korea who was born there... And make her realize how much we need thier hard-working dedication. God bless them!

Yeah - I hate it too - Korean workers are really annoying in that they do NOT RESPECT others privacy - has happened to me many time - being in the shower - completely naked and soaked in water and shampoo - and some guys from the "DHL" or "FEDEX" company comes to deliver a package - knocks loudly and persistently many times and tries to open the door by turning the handle/lock and pounding on the door (forced entry) - why DO THEY do this (in my country that would be illegal).....
I also have no NOISE coming from my apartment except for the sound of the shower running.... I do not understand why they can't take it that noone is home????? (I don't think you should be saying how wonderful this is..... a package can wait)....

well NOT SO - when there are package deliverers etc etc - trying to force their way into your apartment to deliver a package - what if you had left the door (unintentially/mistakenly unlocked) to go out - and come back to find some "DHL" "FEDEX" korean guy waiting in your apartment?

Regarding forced entry, or unnanounced ones at the least, this has happened to me a number of times in the past. Worst case was when I was living in a 4 bdr apt in Hwajong with three other guys. I was dossing in the spare bdr as I was between jobs and was the one most often home through the day as the others were working. Two of the guys had contracts coming to an end so their wonjang wished to let go of the lease and the estate agent was showing the place to prospective tennants. Fair enough, but since I was a man of leisure at the time I would often wake around noon and stagger around the place in boxers or nothing. Imagine my surprise when I came out of my bdr in just a pair of shorts and found 3 well dressed adjumas and the agent there in my loungeroom. They hadn't bothered to knock and just let themselves in. I gave the agent a verbal spray, but that didn't stop the silly cow from repeating her invasion over subsaquent weeks. I swear to god that there is no such thing as privacy in this country.

But privacy is a western notion. What is "privacy"? It's merely a concept you have learned as a result of your own socialization in your own culture. You have this idea that people should give you personal space and leave you alone and that a respect for such an idea exists as an intangible good called, "privacy".
However, the allowance of such a good results in no small liability to societal utility. Korean culture has successfully overcome the flaw in allowing the concept of privacy to overtake the net utility for all in society when such a concept is overally detrimental. In Korea, for example, delivery companies, government officials, real estate agents, and others would have to spend unnecessary money -- acquired from taxes on their own citizens -- just to ensure your 'privacy' is protected. Delivery companies have to come to your door multiple times to deliver your package, utility workers have to call ahead and schedule a time for your chosen preference about when you will be home, and real estate agents have to waste time and money and possibly lose sales as a result of having to work around your schedule. Furthermore, the fact that safety outweighs the flimsy notion of privacy in Korea implies that utity workers can enter your apartment to fix dangerous gas leaks and electric short circuits that might otherwise lead to the destruction of entire city blocks.

so um.. where do you live and when do you shower (I have this old fed ex outfit from when I used to be a delivery boy) Cool

Well, he doesn't have the responsibility to tell me anything as long as he's paying me. He was really kind when he told me that my apartment runs on gasoline powered heat after the gas ran out and I went for 3 days without heat. He even gave me a number to call to get someone to come and fill it up. He didn't have to do that ....

He didn't have to tell me how to use the computer system to input student grades (the entire system uses hangol) but he did because he is kind.

Sure, Korea has problems with building and safety. But they are working hard and dealing with it as best they can. Part of this process might require you to adjust and adapt. It is pretty amazing that only 60 years ago, there was no running water or electricity in Korea! You should just feel honored to be living here, witnessing a process of such rekindling from ash! Remember, being here is what you make of it.
