Hi, I am planning on coming to korea this fall to teach english. On the side I plan to write for travel magazines back home for various parts about East Asia. I'm not worried about the articles, but rather how much time I will have aside from teaching.

What is it like for teachers there? they work all day, come home and are exhausted? is there really much free time?

This question is meaningless. It all depends on where you
work and what you do. If you are a hagwon slave, then
you will probably be pretty busy. A uni teacher will be less
so. An F2 holder can do what they want.

I partly agree with Cohiba. The amount of free time does depend on where you work.

But, there is a limited amount of TV here to watch. Many work mid-afternoon to evening, having all morning free. Others work 8-5 in a public school, but with many long breaks during the day. In other words, most of us have to make an effort to find ways to fill free time. Lots of people write to take up their time. One of the big complaints on this board is what to do to stop the boredom.

(Avoid split shifts...the people with that kind of work schedule frequently complain of being tired all the time. Otherwise, teaching here is probably a good match for your writing.)

I had a roommate who worked at a hagwon. He generally spent 2-3 hours 3 days a week writing. If you plan your day, you should have the mornings free.

Just look at how much time some of us have to waste on Dave's during the day.

As the others said, it completely depends. You could have heaps of spare time or almost none at all.

It's doing it again. Maybe not such a bad thing that I get to teach two lessons this afternoon.

And between baseball lessons this week and YMCA lessons next week the wonderful members of Dave's have helped ensure that I'll have even more time to sit at my desk pressing the refresh button every minute, hoping the php critical error has gove away for a while.

I'm at a public school, which means that I have to be here for 40 hours a week, but I only have to teach 22 hours. This gives me lots of free time to play around, as I am usually done teaching at 12:10 but stay at the school until 4:40. It completely depends on where you work, because last year at a hogwan I had no free time at the school but alot of free time before and after work. And uny jobs...I hear those are the life. Cool
