Which is more fun more a stay of one to three months?

I would guess KL but I know nothing about that area.

And - the deciding factor - Indo girls. Can't beat 'em (well, you can, but that is up to you - they won't say no for sure).

Never been to Jakarta, but yeah, I wouldn't say KL has an edge to it. it's pretty chill and pleasant enough, but not a mind-blowing place by any means. The one thing I'd give KL over jakarta is it's more central to other locations in S.East Asia.

Bear in mind the new visa restrictions for Indonesia. You used to be able to stay for three months, now you get a one month visa only.

I would guess KL but I know nothing about that area.

I've spent a few weeks in Jakarta alone. I've spent one day in Kuala Lumpur.

Overall, I'd say Kuala Lumpur is a much more enjoyable place. Much more developed and a lot more to see (from a touristic perspective).

But.. for FUN.. I'd say Jakarta kicks seriously ass. The city is dirty and the touristic qualities definetely don't match Kuala Lumpur. But everything is MUCH cheaper.. and the nightlife and women of Jakarta are something else. Indonesian women absolutely LOVE foreign guys.. if you are a single guy, you'll definetley wan't to spend time in Jakarta - its amazing there.

The discos and bars and clubs and everything else are also some of the most fun places on earth in Jakarta. KL can't compare on those levels. If you go back to food and restaurants, then KL would be better. If its beer prices and going out, then JKT is MUCH cheaper and more plentiful and much more fun.

In other words..

Better city = Kuala Lumpur
Most Fun = Jakarta

The nightlife of KL is actually pretty good. One bar is the golden triangle was voted best bar in Asia by Asiaexpat. While this can be disputed, it is obvious that the nightlife can't be that bad. Indonesian girls vs. Chinese girls? I don't know, my girlfriend is Korean. KL is definitely more of a touristy place though.

Hm, still pretty hard to say. Which place has worse English speakers? Since I really do no absolutely nothing about the place (as in, a guy who knows nothing would remark "wow, you really know nothing" at what I don't know) I didn't know Jakarta is supposed to be that much fun. I was thinking muslim = boring nightlife.
My favourite thing to do is to somehow find a few people from the city that's just super cool (like a girl who draws cartoons for a living, plays in a band or is a contortionist) and hang out with them all the time, and usually their friends. Oh, or their cat. If one country likes cats better than the other then that's a big plus. I'm not that into bars, though I don't not go to them either. Jazz bars for sure though (I'm a drummer, so liking jazz is a given).

Both nationalities are amazing in the English-speaking abilities.. but Malaysia would be better as its well-rumored they are nearly fluent in English. But the languages of Malay or Indonesian is fairly similar to English in many ways, and the comfortableless with either nationality speaking English is readily visible. However, Malaysia would be higher in that level just slightly - more national campaigns for it. But not by much.

Regarding the muslim and nightlife. Definetely doesn't apply to Jakarta. I've heard good things about KL.. but I've also heard that beer and alcohol prices are some of the highest in Asia.. whereas in Indonesia, thats just not true.. its cheap there.

For finding people who are super cool and hanging out with them.. both cities would be filled with them. However, Malaysia has more economic clout.. so finding someone of as compareable income-level to a westerner would happen more likely in Malaysia than Indonesia. KL also has a sizeable Chinese and Indian population making it more multicultural and interesting. Indonesia pretty much scared away the majority of its chinese minority.

Nightlife again. Everykind of nightlife haven is readily available in Jakarta.. I've even heard hardcore Bangkok addicts rave on about Jakarta nightlife, its just that good.

Jazz Bars.. I'm not too sure about Malaysia.. but Indonesians are AMAZING with all kinds of music - right up there just behind Filipinos in the amazing musicianship abilities. One night in Bandung, I watched a band in a very small bar switch from Indonesian to English to PORTUGUESE (which shocked the hell out of me!) in their songs. Just in general, Indonesians are incredibly talented with music.. again, almost matching Filipinos in those abilities. Not sure about Malaysia.. but definetely true with Indonesians.

For all-around general comfortableness and great restaurants and tourist attractions and the like.. I'd give that to KL though.

The Malay and Indonesian languages are essentially the same language. There are only 2 big differences. First, while Malay takes most of it's loan words from English, Indonesian takes it's from Dutch. Second, Indonesian is actually more standardized with a standardized accent (think Beijing accent Mandarin). Malay, the language really differs from state to state, which is strange because it is such a small country. However, they are both relatively easy languages to pick up, so that would be fun to do, and I am sure you could do it.

In KL, the only people who I had a hard time understanding were the Indian taxi drivers, and it wasn't that they didn't speak English, I just have a hard time with the Indian accent.

I was thinking of KL or Jakarta for my vacation in June. How would you rate them for safety for a white woman traveling alone? Also I noted many of the comments regarded nightlife. Not being interested in going clubbing or to the pubs, which would you recommend: KL or Jakarta?

well since you're white, you're ok. If you were black or asian, you'd be screwed in both cities.

Ok, maybe not. KL is about a safe a city as there is.

Definetely KL.

The only really good thing about Jakarta is the nightlife. I can't think of one other good thing about it really.

But KL is a really amazing city. Very international and multicultural as well. Plus they have the Petrona Towers and more modern architecture and caves outside the city. Plus three distinct cultures in the city (Malay, Chinese and Indian). For a white woman not interested in nightlife, then KL is the obvious winner in this one.
