South Korea gets first woman prime minister

A feminist and former political dissident was picked to become South Korea's first woman prime minister.

Han Myung-Sook, a lawmaker from the ruling Uri Party, was nominated for the vacant post by President Roh Moo-Hyun, a move hailed as a step forward for women in male-dominated South Korea.

The prime minister heads the cabinet and is second only to the president in power under South Korea's constitution.

Han, known as the "godmother" of South Korean feminism, is a two-term lawmaker who served as minister of gender equality in 2001 and environment minister in 2003.

Coudn't possibly be inspired by the recent scandal in the other party, where an official groped a female journalist, could it? Wink

According to the journalist's statement, Choi was sitting next to her and then hugged her, fondling her bre@sts aggressively with both hands. The journalist instantly protested and left the room.
...
Choi responded by saying that he had been drunk and mistook her for the owner of the restaurant.
...
Citizens have complained about Choi's insufficient excuse. Korea's "netizens" asked, "Does he mean that restaurant owners' bre@sts can be touched at any time?"

For once, for me, "netizen" /does not equal/ "neterrorist".

Choi's other excuse -- that he had too much to drink -- has added to the ugly image of politicians that has been emerging through a recent series of scandals involving drunken members of his party.
...
National Assemblyman Hahn Kwang-won of the ruling Uri Party defended Choi on his Web site: "It is natural that everyone who sees a beautiful flower is tempted to enjoy its smell and touch it."
...
Drawing on his previous career as a medical doctor, Chung even suggested that Choi might have suffered from acute alcohol poisoning facilitated by being tired from excessive work, so people should take that into consideration when judging his misbehavior.

So if a guy has a pint or two after a hard day's work and grabs my @ss, that's OK because he's suffering from some kind of acute alcohol/fatigue syndrome?

And of course, seeing as I'm a delicate flower, it's natural to want to grab and smell me.

Female voters' approval of the GNP has dropped by more than five percent points.

Cool

In his district in Kangwon Province, 26 local associations have proclaimed support for Choi. Women's associations are among those supporters.

Evil or Very Mad

Most elderly men in Tonghae, Choi's home district, argue they cannot abandon him because he has taken care of the city for several years. And some say Choi's fate could happen to any man who drinks too much.
...
The issue of women's rights has become secondary. Where Choi's case ends up could be a crucial test for norms on sexual harassment in Korea.

If Choi emerges unscathed, other men might take advantage of the precedent and act inappropriately, hiding behind the claim that "Oops... I must have drunk too much."
