Foreigners to Cast Ballots
Foreigners with permanent residency here will cast ballots in the upcoming local elections in May, exercising their voting rights for the first time to elect governors, mayors and council members.... The law enables 6,579 foreigners, including 6,511 with Taiwanese roots, to participate in voting to elect mayors, governors and council members. They also include 51 Japanese, eight Americans, five Chinese and two Germans.... But NEC does not allow foreign residents to vote in the parliamentary or presidential elections, as current law requires voters for these elections to have South Korean nationality.

That's pretty interesting..and it's a good start. Hopefully someday the rules will be relaxed for parlimentry and presidential elections as well.

This is starting to become a global trend. A number of European countries have recently done the same. This is clearly a great thing for all concerned.

I think the question you should be asking is...why on earth did they want to get permanent residency???

How about being totally free of any restrictions on just about anything? Not only the right to work whenever, whatever and how much I want but also the right to own property, the right to run a business, etc on par with Koreans.

Here is my question. What do you think are the drawnacks of having permanent residency. A better question would be why would anyone not want it if they could get it. You were just trying to be 'too cool for school', right? bash Korea as its such a crappy place WHO would want to get permanent residency here, right?

Cool. I was already planning on submitting my application for an F-5 this week before I found this thread. I've been on the F2-1 for about 5 years.

First, you need to have been on an F2-1 visa for a few years, which you can get by marrying a Korean citizen, investment, or living in Korea for a couple of years.

But, have you had the F5 for three years? Reread the article.

RE-read was not the proper word as I didnt read anything but the OP in this thread. My mistake. I guess Ill have to wait till the next mayoral race, damn, as I wanted to vote in this one and help keep it in GNP hands.

I checked into it a few years ago. If you are not married to a Korean, an ethnic Korean yourself or a millionaire (and I don't mean won), it is not possible. That's what Immi told me.
