|
|
I'll be moving on to another teaching job in Seoul in april, and currently my cellphone is in the name of one of my Korean co-workers. She understandably wants to take her name off my phone contract since I'm leaving, so she told me that she wants to cancel it but if she does this will I be able to just put my name onto the contract and still use the same number when I get back from my visa run to Japan, or will I have to make another start-up payment? I'm not too sure about the process so if anyone can help me out I'd appreciate it. |

Could you possibly transfer that number to a cellphone which you use cards with temporarily?

As far as I'm aware you can only get a cellphone as a Korean resident... in both my, and my equally new co-worker's case, the school director's details were put forth... whatever fees are deducated from our salary each month and we are presented with the bill...
I think its all to do with needing a Korean resident's number to subscribe to anything like that... I'm not 100% but do correct me if I'm wrong...
As an aside to the thread, I was wondering where in Seoul you opted for Plato? I remember that you were reviewing contracts at the same time as I... drop me a PM and let me know - I mean I'm having a wicked time thus far even though I didn't opt for the block shift... |

You can get a prepaid phone if you are a foreigner. |

When I got my phone set up 2 years ago, my korean Friend set it up for me. 6 months later, I went in with him, and it was ransferred out of his name directly into mine.
Its been under my name since.
Never had to put in any deposit.
Thats on LG. While ago, not sure how its changed. |

I have a contract with SK. I want to keep the same phone and number if possible. Do you think I could just switch the name of the person on the contract from my current Korean co-worker to my new school's director for example? Could I put my name on the contract? |

I'm not sure about getting the number transferred but you absolutely can get a regular contract phone in your own name here. I've had mine for nearly 4 years with LGtelecom. |

Turns out its just KTF that require you be Korean for a contract phone... they do offer a pre-pay service but the prices are extortionate... |

yes, I can confirm this quote is to be true. LG Telecom does allow foreigners to obtain regular monthly contacts. I just signed up with them today. The only thing they charge is a 30,000 won activation fee, and if you are strapped for cash they will let you stretch that out to three easy payments of 10,000 won over three months. My suggestions is, if you don't want phone card service go with LG Telecom. |

I used to have SK and they charged a 200.000 deposit that you only get back when you leave, not the 1 year they told me when I initially signed up. I'm now on LG and they have no deposit at all. The activation fee was 30.000 as said above, and that's all.
Also, if you're on SK, and they won't let you change the name easily, just go to an LG store and you can transfer your number to them and use the same phone (hopefully).

How do you know if your phone can be used with a different company or not? |

You can transfer your phone number to your own name at SK. When I first got here, my Korean friend set up my account for me but I looked into changing it into my own name recently and there's a form you need to fill out, in Korean. I'm not sure if there's a fee (haven't gotten around to doing it yet).
I think you need to go into a SK store (one of the ones you can pay your bill at) with someone who speaks Korean and you can take care of it. |

I think that's why all the phone companies moved to 010 numbers a while back/. |

KTF DOES allow foreigners have a contract...as long as you have a Samsung credit card! Kind of crazy! I recently changed from LG to KTF. LG withdrew the payment directly from my bank account. KTF charges it to my Samsung credit card...which comes directly from my bank account!! Just an extra step, but good for me...the points are building up!
BTW...you can transfer ANY number to ANY company. |

That reminds me, if you have a contract phone, ask your phone company for a "DC card-uh" they all have them and you can get some pretty decent benefits. I get discounts on movie tickets, 20% off at lots of western chain style restaurants and 10% off stuff at the family mart with the LG card |
